4th and 3

Green Otaku

Cowardly play calling IMO. We worked hard all game to try and get down there and instead of going for it on 4th down we settle for a field goal. The worst part is we are still down 8 points meaning you back yourself up to a corner and are forced for a 2 point conversion if you score a TD.

I'm of the mentality that you should take that chance and at least give yourself a chance to win instead of allowing the other team to run the game down. Not to mention the motivation going to your side and pumping up your team.

Green Otaku, also thought, 4th down inside the 3, go for it. In the event that we are stopped, say on the one, I would trust our defense to hold them or possibly get a safety or a turnover. General Maximus, Perseus, and King Leonidas would have definitely gone for it. Down by two scores you play to win. As a Chief, I tell my tribe, "It is better to shoot for the moon and land in the mud than shoot for the mud and make it."

What about shooting mud out the ass end like the offense did all game. I do agree with you but it had to be a hard call considering how bad the O was.

Exactly. I would be happy right now if we had gone for it on that play and been stopped, I know we took our shot. Instead we settled.

Yes, I was definitely in the go for it crowd on that one. If we didn't make it, we would had still had them pinned back with less room for Soza to work. Too conservative there.

That and the fake FG were bad calls IMO. If you're going to call a fake on 4th & long in their territory, why not play call for 4 downs instead? Almost seemed like the fake was called on a whim...

Yep, if you know you are in 4 down territory, run a draw on third and hope to catch them napping and pick up the 1st. If you don't, you have a 4th and 5 or 6 instead if 4th and 10.

Definitely a last minute decision and a terrible one. No one in that stadium thought they were going to attempt a 56 yard field goal when the previous 44 yarder had barely crept over the crossbar.

Would have rather of seen us just keep the offense on the field.

Really bad offensive coaching all the way around this game. The only thing worse than the offense coaching was the crap job that crap Tulane official crew did yet again. We should have had 15 seconds on the clock with First and goal at the one, but they F'd up that final drive soooo bad. Completion for a first down at the UTSA 40? Just kick the ball 10 yards downfield, don't stop the clock for the first down, and burn 10 seconds respotting the ball.

Just terrible officiating. That crew shouldn't be allowed to officiate major college athletics.

Agreed. I understand the points on the board is the "right" call, but it looked like a concession.

I would say "traditional" call, not the "right" one. You're down 11 points. By taking the 3, chances are if you give up points of any kind, you lose the game. Our defense didn't have their "A" game today. Nothing I had seen led me to believe that was likely. You have the ball on the 3. There are no guarantees you make it back down there that far, especially considering how our offense was playing. And the thing is, you're going to have to convert IN THAT EXACT SITUATION(1 play from the 3) on the 2-point conversion, if you do kick the field goal there, and everything works out and you score the TD later, and they don't score again. If you score a TD, a FG by them doesn't essentially end the game. We are so conservative it hurts.

Yup, and I saw no one on our sideline saying a thing about it.

Earlier UTSA talked the side judge into reversing a completion call that would have given us a first down. So it seems we could have at least pointed out to someone that they allowed time to run after the first down and demand time to be replaced.

So why would that surprise you?

Where in my post did I say I was surprised at that?

That was the main reason I wanted to see us out anyone else at qb this year. The coaches never trusted DT all three years and he really never did much to earn it. Don't know if the coaches would've trusted any other qb more, but we knew going in that they didn't trust DT and they still don't. 11 games into this "new" season.
