While at UT-Arlington, Smatresk was in the thick of efforts to parlay the research and resources of the state’s universities into economic development advances. He served for five years as director of Texas Science Careers Consortium and served o the boards of the Arlington Technology Incubator and the UTA Nanotechnology Research & Education Center.

He decamped from UTA in 2004 to become vice chancellor for academic affairs for the University of Hawaii at Manoa, that system’s flagship institution. In 2007, he became executive vice president and provost at Nevada-Los Vegas before ascending to its presidency two years later.

UNT posted a preliminary enrollment of 36,185 undergraduate and graduates this fall, putting it behind only the Texas A&M (53,330), UT-Austin (52,076) and the University of Houston (39,498) in terms of student population, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. UTA had 33,337 students this fall, placing it sixth behind Texas State University (35,568).
