From what I can gather on him in google searches, he is heavy-handed in athletics.

Interesting entry on Gopherhole.com (UNLV opened their season VS Minnesota):

The rumor was that the president (Neil Smatresk) wanted to fire him at the end of last season, but the AD (Jim Livengood) refused. Livengood then resigned unexpectedly a short while later after apparently again clashing with Smatresk. They brought in an interim AD (Tina Kunzer Murphy) who has slashed Athletic Department salaries and appears to have been given the power to fire support staffers, supposedly to give the new AD (when hired) a clean slate. It would not surprise me to see her fire coaches too, and Hauck would be the first to go.

At least he wasn't a UT-Austin undergraduate. Not that I don't like animals, but not sure what to make of a zoology guy as a university president. Welcome aboard.

Rawlins and Bataille both had liberal arts PhD's, Economics and English. I don't know that the PhD matters as much just means they were a professor at one point and worked their way up to administration.

This probably helped his case a little bit with the College of Education, which is one of UNT's brightest stars:

In addition to his teaching and administrative roles, Smatresk has devoted considerable effort to kindergarten to doctorate (K-20) science outreach programs and teacher professional development. He has participated in a number of consortia focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) career development.

Well if you run a zoo, you have to keep a bunch of different animals happy, have great facilities, and get people to visit your facilities.

Kind of like keeping pro athletics and anti athletics people happy.

Thank you Neal Smatresk for your impeccable timing. I was getting close to gouging out my eyes due to the gross ignorance of the UTSA fanbase regarding just about everything.

Your impending announcement provides us a slight reprieve from arguing with those fools, if only for a few hours.
