In the heat of the summer, when the temperature soared into triple digits and times were at their toughest during workouts, Aaron Bellazin kept reminding his fellow North Texas defensive linemen about the perception of how they would impact the Mean Greens season.

UNT had a veteran quarterback in Derek Thompson, a stable of good running backs, a veteran offensive line and potentially one of the best linebackers in Conference USA in Zach Orr.

What it didnt have was a lot of certainty on its defensive front.

Defensive end Brandon McCoy and defensive tackle Ryan Boutwell missed spring practice with injuries, while Richard Abbe, the anchor of UNTs defensive front, was suspended most of the summer after he was charged with DWI.

Those players were part of a unit that lost its best player in end K.C. Obi to graduation following last season, when the Mean Greens line was considered average at best.

Bellazin has been maybe the most unsung hero on the whole team all year, along with the defensive line as a whole. He has played like a first-team all-conference defensive end and he's leading the conference in sacks. Really having a great senior season.

If I remember correctly, Bellazin transferred from SMU which makes it even sweeter. No, we did not beat Texas in 2002 but we kept them scoreless in the second half while most of the game was played by our freshman quarterback. Andrew Smith. The only old SWC teams we have never beaten in football are Texas, Arkansas and A&M, but, gosh. we came so close to beating the first two in '88 and '68. Those two losses (we really won both) will always hurt).

No, we did not beat Texas in 2002 but we kept them scoreless in the second half while most of the game was played by our freshman quarterback. Andrew Smith. The only old SWC teams we have never beaten in football are Texas, Arkansas and A&M, but, gosh. we came so close to beating the first two in '88 and '68. Those two losses (we really won both) will always hurt).

Bellazin wasn't an SMU transfer. He committed and signed with Todd Dodge at UNT.

We haven't beaten old SWC members Southwestern, Phillips, or Oklahoma, but we have beaten OK State. :rolleyes: Pardon my smartassness.

      Who did better? PAC 12 or Mountain West?

      MWC is a push in overall terms from before the raid to after. Still a solid G6 but lower than the AAC in my mind. PACx has survived, which is all one can really expect for a conference that got shattered in the realignment. But the 2 legacy P4 schools cannot elevate that new version higher than the G6 bunch. Both of the conferences will get low-to-mid TV coverage, and fill the late schedule spots. For the AAC, I'm happy with Army over SMU. I wish we could have pulled Air Force, but so be it. I do expect the PACx to make another run at Memphis, that should be interesting. Fun fact: I've been tracking the realignment via a spreadsheet. As of the NIU change, 46 teams have changed conferences since OUT announced their move to the SEC.

      Transfer Portal Hits pre First Responder Bowl

      Because Morris & Cobbs believed they didn't need to. I think McGill, Harris, & Evans are returning, but who knows if Harris or Evans will even be healthy? We added Becks from MOSt, and Hawkins from HS in OK, but who knows what they bring? I don't know that McGill is a starting caliber RB in the AAC. If you think Porter should have been scholarship'd, you're second-guessing Pat. I doubt anyone around here really wants to second-guess Pat's judgement of talent. OR (and this is doubtful), Pat pushed to have Porter 'shiped, but Morris said "no". If that's the case, and Porter goes on to ball-out at UTEP while we struggle in the run game, it's another log on a growing fire under Morris' seat.

      The PAC stands a real chance of becoming the 'Big East of the West', but I think they'll still be fighting to get into the CFP each year with the rest of the G5. MWC obviously is a huge downgrade since they're the conference that got raided. The best thing they have going for them is stability. Outside of AFA and, to a lesser degree, NIU and UNLV, no one has any interest in those schools. AAC did well with the Army pickup. What happens in the next few years under the new commissioner will be important. As a conference, we've scheduled ourselves into a one bid joke like Sun Belt or CUSA. They've gotta figure out some strategy there. For football, it's hard to say we're better or worse off than last year. SMU going to the CFP was a fluke compared with the past 30 years, but I imagine they'll be a stronger program in general than they were in the AAC due to the amount of money and attention the ACC brings. At least while it lasts...

      In terms of the Pac12/MWC tweet above and what they both started with (not the legacy Pac, the WSU and OSU Pac), the Pac12 came out way ahead of the MWC. They need 1 more right? Where do they get it or do they try to add more than one. In terms of the AAC, SMU out and Army In. Love having another service academy as a conference mate and it was probably the best move the conference could make...national recognition and following. The whole Army/Navy game piece is kind of a monkey wrench. Overall, with SMU's performance and getting into the CFP this year makes the loss of SMU a bit more that the addition of Army (at least this year). Let's see how the next couple years pan out.
