The Stand

My bad...how could I have forgotten "the STAND"???

This thread is irreverent now...that was a historical program moment...enough said!

*just to be clear...I'm not being sarcastic...that was the defining play/plays of this season

Maybe not a defining play, but the hits Laramie Lee and the defense threw down in that Ball St. game really kinda laid out for everyone as to the type of defense we had. I think that game made the defense start believing in themselves as a unit that could take games over, and make other offenses not want to play football anymore.

Maybe not for the program, but for me, I have to go with Lairamie Lee vs. the Ball State offense as well. When I yelled his name and all of the Aggie, Oregon, ASU, etc. fans started paying as much attention to our game televised in AZ as their own...made me realize we might be getting somewhere.

1. The blocked punt at Georgia that tied the game in the 2nd half as it gave us some legitmacy with the media and fans.

2. The last play of the stand. If we hadn't made that play the other 7 wouldn't have counted.

3. Lairamie Lee's pick-6 against Middle Tenn. It started the 34-7 blowout of a very good team after the Tulane loss.

If we had lost that game the season would look entirely different.

I still like the Tulane game as the turnaround. The Ball State game began showing them what they could be. The Georgia game showed that they could hang with the better teams of the country; at least for awhile. The Tulane game showed them that if they weren't together every single play that they could lose to a lesser team. Since that game they have not lost a game, home or away. The STAND was the punctuation mark of their new identity.

The Stand is The Stand!

Do not stare directly into The Stand, for The Stand will steal your soul.

I'd go with the first play of the stand. The defender stopping the running cold with a big hit, then grabbing his leg, lifting his leg and planting him into the turf set the tone for the rest of The Stand.

My defining play was probably on the surface very insignificant, especially to the TV veiwer watching NT vs UGA. But to me it was the turning point this season.

NT had come back to tie it at 21 with the blocked punt in the 3rd, but UGA went on to extended the lead by 14 to 35-21.

But with 14:52 to go in the 4th qtr on a 1st and 10 at the UGA 33 yard line Derek Akunne hit Gurley in the ribs forcing a fumble that Kenny Buyers recovered at the UGA 34.

When they came off the field after getting us the ball back i could see there was no moral victory in those dudes eyes. They expected a win against the 9th ranked team in the nation and they have played with that same level of passion ever since.
