If one has been around the UNT football program for the last several years, Spencer Leftwich is a familiar name.

UNT’s former offensive line coach played a big role in UNT’s four-year run as Sun Belt Conference champions back in the early 2000s and then came back for a brief stint before quickly getting out of dodge the first chance he got, taking a job at Tulsa.

Lefty, who is a great guy and just as good a coach, is now the offensive line coach at UTEP. What makes the connection all the more interesting is that UTEP coach Sean Kugler today named Lefty’s son Mack Leftwich the Miners starting quarterback for Saturday’s game between UNT and UTEP. Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times has the news.

Wow . . . that's a desperation move, to pull the RS off of him this late in the season.

Big time. They're putting the kid into a tough situation for his first game too. He's a sub 6 foot qb starting his first game as a true freshman. Skladany is going to frustrate him.

The final numbers for his senior year were 177-of-268 passes for 3,331 yards with the 45-4 touchdown-interception ratio, and he rushed for 553 yards on 138 carries with 10 rushing touchdowns.

Pretty salty numbers. And he was the PA POY.

Agreed but PA football ain't nothing like Texas football. We'll see just how salty he is on Sat.

Same can be said for Mullens being the Gatorade AL POY . 3,649 yds. 40-7 TD-INT ratio.

Doesn't matter. Lil' Lefty is considered to be a Dual-threat. I have a feeling he's going to be very impressed with how quickly Zach/Will/Derek get on him if he scrambles. And if Laramie finds him... Lord help him.

I remember watching Mac play a Strickland MS in Denton as QB. Even then he was a very smart player and had a good arm, but of course that was Middle School football. This Saturday will be something completely different!

I really wish we would play clips from Necessary Roughness on the vidja board. Just imagine clips of Popke running around panic stricken after a sack or, or "You must show respect." after a great defensive play.
