Maybe time to raise our standards?

Perhaps so, but where is the line? If we're going for the just the most elite do we end at? All-Americans? Playing in the pros? Olympics (for T&F athletes)? The PGA? Etc, etc.

The standard is "great for UNT." Not great across the NCAA.

For the record, I wouldn't think he gets in now either. If we end the year 11-3 with a conference title and Bowl victory to his credit...PLUS his passing numbers I'd think he'd get in. Maybe not on the first ballot, but eventually.

I don't think Derek Thompson is a HOF, not at all. And I'm a DT supporter. Now for this next statement I need to put on my bullet proof armor because I'm about to get pounded on. I was/am in the camp that Scott Hall isn't a HOF either. It is like my argument about other HOF. It is the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Really Good.

For me the HOF should be for guys like Mean Joe, Ron Shanklin, Hayden Fry. Mitch Maher (yes!), Booger, PC, Lance Dunbar and people like that. Hell even JQ.

It doesn't take away the accomplishments or contributions of integral members like Scott Hall and DT. But it also doesn't make them HOF. Just my opinion. Now watch as the negative points add up on my reply.

Great point.

Begs the question then, who is HOF worthy from this team. Chancellor and Orr come to mind, anyone else?

I would say guys that took over numerous games and greatly affected almost every game, whether they were having good games or not as good games.

That's why I believe Zach Orr and Chancellor are Hall of Famers. Not really going out on a limb there, but they play their butt's off at all times and they affect games no matter what. Even when Chancellor's stats aren't great for a game you know he affected the play calling of the opposing defensive coordinator and special teams which usually opens things up for other players and helps the team. Same thing for Zach.

There are some other guys who have HOF potential on this team but they're younger or not quite seniors, but for sure Orr and Chancellor have proven themselves to be those type of game changer/HOFers. Hard to say the next time we'll get guys like Orr or Chancellor, but we will have guys who can change games and are worthy of HOF status in the future.

Teams constantly putting 8 and 9 in the box throughout DT's career doesn't bode well for his HOF status.

I think it depends on the rest of the season. Right now, I don't think so. If he rips off a couple more good games, we win the conference, and put up a big time bowl win, then we have a conversation. He has been good, not great. The records he is looking at are a war of attrition at this point. He has simply played enough games to move up the list. Having a defense that gives him more attempts also helps give him opportunities to put up numbers. Orr is the obvious choice in this senior class to be a HOF'er with Brelan right there behind him.

Good to see you posting on here again. Still doing radio somewhere these days? I used to like calling into your show on Sunday afternoons for golf nerd/Tiger arguments back in the day.

I left that life behind when I was let go by Sporting News Radio. It's a terrible industry. I have too many talented friends that I would watch bounce around all over the country and were extremely paranoid all the time. I didn't want that anymore after I got married. More important to provide for my family. But I did enjoy all of the Tiger debates and cool moments I had in that career.

Yes, easily. He will end up owning almost every record among all of North Texas' I-A/FBS-level quarterbacks. And, he did so with far less talent all the way around, on both sides of the ball, than Steve Ramsey had.

If anyone who has ever worn the Mean Green deserves first ballot Hall of Fame election, it's Derek.

I know that you are madly in love with DT, but come on. Any Mean Green player ever? That is just plain crazy. Mean Joe disagrees among many others. Frankly, I doubt that Derek would agree.

The topic isn't who is the best player to ever play for the Mean Green. The topic is "Derek Thompson...1st ballot UNT Hall of Famer?"

So, put on your thinking cap here:

-Which UNT quarterback will lead in most statistical categories? That would be Derek.

-Which UNT quarterback will have led the team back to a bowl game? That would be Derek.

-Which Hall of Fame are we talking about: Pro Football? NCAA? Or, UNT? That would be UNT.

To have your best quarterback, the one who led your program out of an eight-year losing streak, not make your own school's Hall of Fame on the first ballot would be an embarrassment to the school.

You are really stretching reality here. How would this be an embarrassment to the school? Without looking it up, who is in the Rice HOF? Do any of those players met a similar criteria to Derek? Don't know? I guess the school should be embarrassed.

Statistics don't mean that you get into the HOF. Putting up average numbers over the course of more seasons than the competition doesn't mean that you were better than everyone else. Let's be honest about some of the stats you love so much, we are in a different era of college football that emphasizes the pass more than in the past. He is going to have better numbers than others simply because of the style of play. Add to that the QB history of UNT is not covered in a fantastic legacy of great player after great player. Consistency does not make one great.

Like I said earlier in the thread, let's see how the remainder of the season plays out before we make him a first ballot HOF'er. I think Derek has done a great job this year, but I don't think that he has established himself in the history of the school.

I didn't start that talk, you did.

I've come to the conclusion that TFLF is either:

1) entering dementia,

2) off his medication,

3) trolling,

4) is actually DT.

Has anyone noticed TFLF is never in game chats, or posts during games? Is that because... HE IS TOO BUSY BEING THE STARTING QB FOR NORTH TEXAS!?!?!

That's not true. Steve Ramsey threw passes more than Derek Thompson...and still completed less passes and threw twice as many interceptions. Without the NFL-quality receivers and linemen - and defense on the other side - that Ramsey had, Derek is breaking his records. In a run-first offense, Derek is breaking the records of Ramsey who played in a pass heavy offense.

So, you have two I-A/FBS-level quarterbacks who stand above the rest in North Texas' history: Steve Ramsey and Derek Thompson. Ramsey was the All-Century QB for NT, and Thompson is breaking his records...with less around him, and in offenses geared toward the run.

Ramsey took over a team that had been conference co-champs the year before he became starter. Thompson took over a program that had been 3-9 and hadn't had a winning season in six seasons.

Sorry. What Derek has done in this program is Hall of Fame worthy.

No. Remember that during the Dodge Era I was outed as Northeastern State coach Kenny Evans.
