I also think it helps that all of Texas plays all over now. We are legit with other programs who play sec AAC big 12 and even sbc. Multiple leagues represented. We have also shined at he right times on tv against Georgia rice and box scores from southern miss and la tech. We are rising and winning in a league many said we would need years of time in to cut our teeth. Play consistent win an come out healthy against utep.

Over the weekend a server at twin peaks by smu noticed our green gear and mentioned she was at twu but all her friends were at UNT. She knew of our bowl eligibility clinching win. I was impressed.

That is impressive. I went to the new one in Ft. Worth a couple weeks ago and our server barely knew how to tie her own shoes.

I was in the Academy sports store yesterday with my wife and daughter. The daughter and I had on our NT shirts. The girl in line behind us asks "Do you go to UNT?" I explained that I was an alum and she says "We're bowl...worthy, or something...now". I asked if she was there Thursday and she said yes and that she couldn't wait for Homecoming. Said there is quite a buzz amongst her friends who "aren't really football people" normally.

One question.

What the hell does your wife have against UNT?

I work at the new Academy in Flower Mound / Highland Village area and we have 1 UNT hat, no shirts, and 2 license plate styles.

BUT, a ton of people come through the store throughout the weekend wearing their Mean Green attire and ask about it. My manager has begun to take notice.

Change IS happening. Retailers will catch up.

Was it like this during the bowl years? Or was there no publicity and nobody cared because of Fouts/SBC/OOC games?

Obviously Apogee helps.... but media technology is the HUGE difference. Not many had computers on their phones in the early 2000's & NOW people dont look up from their phone, tablets or laptops. News travels and gets out much faster. More to google...

This is an excellent point.

I talked to an alum who told me that Fouts was a dump when it was completed in '52.

Really? Seems like the pretty standard early 50's stadium to me. I have been in many college stadiums built around that time and Fouts seemed pretty standard and more than adequate for UNT at the time.

But...darn sure was a dump by the time Apogee came along...well, really...a dump for many years before Apogee came along, but a dump immediately when built? Doubtful.

BTW...has the guy been back to see Apogee? Hope so. He will be delighted.

That's because very few football fields were ever built equidistant to the stands. Someone should have been fired for signing off on that design.

BTW. In comparing eras...

. Our win over Cincy in the N.O. Bowl gained us a lot of attention because they were Co-Champions of C-USA.

Then our route of Baylor gained even more. We also had Patrick Cobbs featured on the front page of Dave Campbell's during one of those seasons and DCTF stated we were getting the most done with the least resources in their opening article.

At a restaurant this weekend wearing my white SOW hat, when the waiter asked me what Bowl is NT going to. I had to correct him and say we're only bowl eligible and probably wont know until years end. Then asked him to please hurry with my beer and french bread in a snobby SEC-booster like tone. All this winning has really gotten to my head. :P

Now that is hysterical!

Longhorn fan on way to Austin texted on Friday and said how about the mean green! We had a lot if eyes watching us. Even one frog or pony fan stated that goal line stand was amazing! I am sure hey tries to confiscate his degree!

Make sure when you see this UNT gear you thank the manager of the establishment... bees with honey type principle.

Good point, Harry and try to buy something even it is only T-Shirt or a coffee mug.

Good to know. I was gonna Tweet the Academy account to complain that the brand new store that is 13 miles from the 3rd largest University in the state only had two insulated mugs for Mean Green merchandise...

IMO, just saying that Mac is a Great ambassador for the University - He is likable and gets people fired up. DD often seemed to put out the "us against the world" persona that was not always likable.

Forgive me Father Emmitt, for I have sinned greatly.

Received an invite and attended the UT - Kansas game last weekend. Needless to say I was the only fan wearing anything North Texas. Had a guy walk up to me in the club and acknowledged my school affiliation, and asked if I attended the Rice game. Which I did. I was surprised when he introduced himself as the CFO of Apogee and absolutely loved UNT, the stadium, the Rice game, etc. Nice chap.

Sorry, this is just an excuse. I went to my first game at Fouts in the mid/late 60's and never knew there was something better out there for years. Fouts is a convenient excuse for those fair weather fans to use for not coming.

The guys from Apogee have been nothing but stellar in their sponsorship and support of UNT from the day ink hit contract.

As for Fouts, it's my understanding that by 1952 standards, it was a great stadium. I can only use MLB as an example since I never got to go to NFL games as a kid, but I think most of don't remember the exposed pipes, peeing in troughs, rusted out seats of even major league stadiums when we were kids. It's really only been about 20 years since stadiums started to include luxury accouterments. Prior to that, they were very utilitarian pack as many people in as cheaply as possible affairs. If you ever get to Fenway, even after several iterations of renovations, you'll see.

All that said and done, Apogee is a fantastic stadium. I appreciate it more and more as I either attend or drive by other FBS stadiums. We've got a Hilton to others' Super 8.

On Friday after the game I went to deposit a check at a bank in Corinth. I was wearing my NT polo type shirt still riding the high from winning the night before. Both tellers looked up and were excited to talk about the game. They were both students. The guy teller is a finance major so we spent some time chatting about professors we both had. He asked if I worked at unt and said nope, an alum of 10 years and a fan. He planned on going to homecoming and said that we needed to start winning after jacking up the student fees. He said it with a smile so I didnt think too much about it. But, they had genuine excitement about their school! It was fun.

He is right. We have the facilities.

No excuses.
