UTEP was competitive early. Lost a huge momentum battle in the 2nd quarter and things started to slip. This article talks about the loss of Showers and his impact on the team.

Rice has had a little of the Tulane magic this year. But good teams manage to find good luck more than the rest of us.

Still, UTEP was competitive for a while. Blaire Sullivan came off the bench and threw a beautiful 50-yard touchdown pass to Hamilton that got UTEP within 10-7. On the next series, the Miners appeared certain to get within 17-14 when Jones broke what looked like it would be an 84-yard touchdown run. But what happened next shows why Rice is 6-2 and UTEP is 1-6. A diving Julius White, at full lunge, swatted Jones' foot and caused him to trip at the 3-yard line. Two plays later, it was Jones lunging and stretching at the goal line, but Michael Kutzler knocked the ball out as Jones tried to reach it in.

Rice recovered, converted a third-and-8 from its own 3 on a 17-yard run, and the 99-yard drive to go up 24-7 with 17 seconds left in the half seemed inevitable.
