By all accounts, Nick Mullens simply gets it.

Southern Miss’ true freshman quarterback, who was announced as the starter for Saturday’s homecoming game versus North Texas, may have turned 18 years old a mere seven months ago, but he’s miles ahead of where many others would be given the circumstances.

On Tuesday – a day after he was named the starting quarterback – when a reporter asked Mullens what he thought was his best attribute, he said his leadership ability and his accuracy.

“I have two that I really value: being a leader and being accurate,” he said. “They always say, ‘You can’t defend a perfect ball.’ So that’s what I try to do.”

Good game

Mullens, who has appeared in three games this season, saw his most significant playing time in relief of Allan Bridgford last week at East Carolina. He finished 9-of-17 for 97 yards with two touchdowns.

I get the feeling their squad will get a bit of a pump out of this change. We should expect them to come out tough. That being said, I hope we rattle this kid early and force him (and the other 6 true freshman starting) to begin to make mistakes.

Pretty much everyone comes out tough against us on the road.

It was during cleanup time against their 3rd string.

9-17 for 97 yards, 2 TDs and 1INT.

Against ECUs 3rd team.

He will be running for his life. I'm predicting 4 picks and less than 200 passing yards for the true freshman who just had 1st team reps this week and is making his first start in FBS football.

Make that 3 INTs and one TO by fumble. He does like to move around, after all.
