There is a Denton 2030 meeting Oct. 29 from 2-4 at UNT to get student input on the Denton Master Plan. http://www.dentonplan2030.com

I love what this city councilman has to say about a university(s) town.

Kevin Roden, right, a Denton city councilman and assistant director for student life at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Sciences, said many community committees have looked at issues to prepare a vision statement. Now the group is ready to unveil that, get feedback on it and begin forming more detailed plans.

Involving the campus is important, Roden said, because universities represent a significant portion of Denton’s population.

“We have close to 48,000 college students in this city, so their input is important to the city. The success of the city depends on the success of the universities.”

I also hear he likes college football.

I've known him since my freshman year. He lived next door to me before he got his first job at TAMS. I didn't even realize he ran for City Council until after the election because I usually just noticed his "Think and Drink" event stuff...he would have these events where people could go have a beer and discuss different topics. He's a pretty sharp cookie.

Does anyone know if he is any relation to the late Finance professor Foster Roden?

I had Foster Roden as my first finance professor in the fall of 1993. He always opened up class by saying, "OK class, let's open our books to page ___ and lets sing all 8 verses of ____", like we were at church. Of course, he wrote that finance book, so maybe he knew that where "Amazing Grace" or "The Old Rugged Cross" were printed deep in the text!!

No doubt Kevin is a good guy, but any discussions I've had with him about UNT athletics paints a very different picture... at least, of how he feels about UNT's athletics...

He seems to lean towards the 'Why would an intelligent person give to a university's athletics fund? Those donations should go to academics.' line of thought.

I haven't asked him, but I'm pretty sure if you tried to get him involved with the flags on light posts and didn't engage in a debate about types of fundraising, he'd probably help get the ball rolling or at least give you an outline of what you'd need to do before it could be approved...and it wouldn't hurt if you were a registered voter in District 1...

Foster Roden was a good guy. He always tried to recruit people for his trips to Mexico. I was sad to hear of his passing.
