Rice is no different than SMU, Tulane, and Tulsa. When they win, they reach their maximum of about 25k of their own "fans" that come out to watch a game, while depending on their local big city media to provide free advertisements for them through the coverage they receive. Their students are rich, pampered, very smart (often because of the first part), and they tend to be even more fair-weathered as fans than the students at public universities in similar urban settings.

Rice, like the other private schools I listed above, also provides the big AQs something that they love in a non-AQ partner--a game in a bigger city that holds a lot of their alums or traveling fans in their town. Rice gets Texas in Houston, Tulsa gets OU in Tulsa, Tulane gets LSU in NO, and SMU gets A&M and Tech in Dallas. The big AQ teams own those markets, so they can get to see their team play without traveling all the way back to Austin, Norman, Baton Rouge, College Station, or Lubbock. Plus, the AQs fans also know the name of those small private schools, so it adds a tad to the history or rivalry of the game.

We never got that chance here in Denton with any of those big AQs. It would have been cool to have had one of those giant AQs show up in Denton, but that's not how the cookie crumbled. I still think that Okie State could play that role here, especially with T Boone being based here. I think it would work out just as well for OSU as it would for us, certainly better than it has for OSU to go play at some SBC spare or UTSA. Just my $.02.

The only thing better than a cold whisky sour on a warm Georgia night....

is telling the truth.

It is a warm Georgia night tonight on the back porch and by your suggestion I have a whisky sour in hand. The trees are starting to turn and leaves are to starting to fall. The truth is I am hoping we outscore Southern Mississippi this weekend.

Have you ever been to Rice's campus? We lived in the Houston area for 2 years. their campus sits directly inbetween Barrio A and Barrio B. Not a sign a very many rich folk. U of H is actually safer. One of the main reasons why my favorite player rejected the offer. Edited by SSP

What? Are you sure you've ever been to Houston? I was born and raised in Houston, and Rice sits in West U., which is a high dollar area almost akin to River Oaks, which btw sits around 4 or 5 miles directly to the north. U of H is the one that sits IN the ghetto/barrio or whatever you want to term it. West University may be only a half dozen miles from a major downtown area (as is Highland Park), but it is far from low dollar.

i don't think i would put rice in the same boat as smu or tulane when it comes to rich and pampered... i think moreso than that these students are just effin smart

Yes, Rice is much more of a national school which caters to high achievers. Kind of like the Harvard of the South/Southwest. SMU is more of a rich kid's school where academics may matter, but it doesn't compare to Rice. I would think Tulane falls somewhere in between.

WHEN was last time you visited Houston???

NOT the same land, my friend. I was scared to death when I strolled (in a car) through Rice's projects. We lived in The Woodlands for almost 2 years (2010-2012). My Engineer husband worked on the project to condemn most of the buildings surrounding rice that were inhabited by homeless. If you grew up in Houston you know that they don't have any zoning restrictions out there. It's gone downhill in a bad way since Katrina.

oh... and most from River Oaks fled North to The Woodlands, South to Pearland or Kingwood.

And I would hardly compare anything west of H to Highland park. At least, anymore. Katy is nice, but please.

You must be confusing Houston with Chicago or somewhere, because there are no projects anywhere near Rice. My best old high school buddy is married to an MD Anderson doctor, and we spent the weekend with them at their house only a few hundred yards from Rice stadium just a couple of weeks ago. No gunfire too be heard anywhere. Btw, I spend about 25-30% of my life in the Houston area these days (including The Woodlands/Conroe), so I'm not speaking from inexperience.

Wow... I guess I'm a snob. That's news to me after where I stayed in New Orleans.

We went on the visit with my brother to check out the stadium, etc. The reason why everything sparkled to him was because of the academics. One visit to the campus and he was thinking Spokane, WA. (obviously Pre UNT Offer) You're the first person I've ever met that has implied that Houston is an awesome place to live in the past 10 years. And I've lived there. Like, lately.

LOL!! You're funny! Yes, River Oaks has emptied out and property values have gone to absolute Hell there. That is truly hilarious. Katy? HA HA! Enough with you. I can see that you're the type who will argue with facts until Hell freezes over, if the facts are contrary to your deeply ingrained opinions. Bye bye.

Stop making stuff up. I never even implied that Houston was an awesome place to live, and I've lived there a lot more than you have, LATELY. Pathetic. Bye bye. Finally.

I could honestly give 2 blanks. I know what I know. I am not challenging you to a battle of wits. I don't know what I would have to gain by saying any of this. See the Eagles Nest Forum if you feel offended and want to go to blows from there. Bye bye.

Let me be clear: Rice is not Detroit. But, a comparison to even SMU as far as "a nice area" is concerned is a moot topic. It is right across a highway from the 3rd ward. Please. I was in Pearland 2 months ago.

Rice is in Montrose and Fannin, one of the most beautiful and awesome areas of Houston around Hermann Park and the zoo. Have you never been to Houston? It's a great place to live. Rice is by the Medical Center, Hermann Park, Montrose, Museum District the Zoo, etc. One of the richest areas in the state and country and considered the cultural center of Texas. It's about 20 minutes from the Third Ward. Are you trying to say River Oaks isn't nice anymore? Are you stupid? River Oaks is still where 90% of the money in Houston is located. FACT. River Oaks was named in 2011 as the seventh richest block in the COUNTRY. You can't buy a house in River Oaks for under $1,000,000. The median income in Bellaire, the neighboring city to River Oaks has an average household income of nearly six figures and Montrose was named one of the "ten best neighborhoods in America" by the American Planning Association...

Clearly you haven't experienced Houston.

You called Katy nice, which invalidated your entire statement.

Oh, and...

Pearland=/=Houston

That's like me saying I've been to DFW and experienced DFW because I've been to Weatherford.

UH is in one of the most dangerous areas in the COUNTRY.

Houston (excluding Sunnyside and the Third Ward) is a helluva better place to live anywhere in DFW excluding Denton and downtown Fort Worth

Are you screwing with me?

You cant be serious.

I'll take Dallas after dark before Houston any day of the week. I still have my zoo pass in my wallet. A "kid" ( I say kid bc she looked at least 16) got raped the last day we went before we moved back to DFW.

I'm hearing twilight zone music.....

Some kid got raped on UNT campus. Happens all the time, every where. Get out of your bubble. Unfortunate, but true.

However, UH's campus is 2 miles from the 15th most dangerous intersection IN THE COUNTRY.

I am. I grew up in Houston. I've traveled more than you have, I can pretty much guarantee that.

Your ignorant typical Dallasite comments are just par for the course and makes it obvious you don't travel often.

These are cold hard facts and stats.

As anyone on here knows, don't argue with me about Houston.

Agree to disagree.

Ignorant, I am not. I have literally lived in every major city in the state of Texas.

That doesn't make me an expert, but as stated in other threads "it entitles me to my own opinion without being publicly mamed".

You should take your subtle personal attacks back, they are offensive. And I'm sorry for implying that you were an inexperienced 21 year old. That was rude.

Even though I am not a "Dallasite" I will claim Dallas as long as UNT is closer to it than t he slums of Houston. GMG.

Oh... and one more truth for you. My bubble was doing keg stands in Ireland while you were hitting puberty...

Crap. That was may be offensive again, wasn't it? DONE.
