Rice is no different than SMU, Tulane, and Tulsa. When they win, they reach their maximum of about 25k of their own "fans" that come out to watch a game, while depending on their local big city media to provide free advertisements for them through the coverage they receive. Rice, like the other private schools I listed above, also provides the big AQs something that they love in a non-AQ partner--a game in a bigger city that holds a lot of their alums or traveling fans in their town. Rice gets Texas in Houston, Tulsa gets OU in Tulsa, Tulane gets LSU in NO, and SMU gets A&M and Tech in Dallas. The big AQ teams own those markets, so they can get to see their team play without traveling all the way back to Austin, Norman, Baton Rouge, College Station, or Lubbock. Plus, the AQs fans also know the name of those small private schools, so it adds a tad to the history or rivalry of the game.

We never got that chance here in Denton with any of those big AQs. It would have been cool to have had one of those giant AQs show up in Denton, but that's not how the cookie crumbled. I still think that Okie State could play that role here, especially with T Boone being based here. I think it would work out just as well for OSU as it would for us, certainly better than it has for OSU to go play at some SBC spare or UTSA. Just my $.02.

Have you ever been to Rice's campus? We lived in the Houston area for 2 years. their campus sits directly inbetween Barrio A and Barrio B. Not a sign a very many rich folk. U of H is actually safer. One of the main reasons why my favorite player rejected the offer. Edited October 22, 2013 by SSP

What? Are you sure you've ever been to Houston? I was born and raised in Houston, and Rice sits in West U., which is a high dollar area almost akin to River Oaks, which btw sits around 4 or 5 miles directly to the north. U of H is the one that sits IN the ghetto/barrio or whatever you want to term it. West University may be only a half dozen miles from a major downtown area (as is Highland Park), but it is far from low dollar.

Yes, Rice is much more of a national school which caters to high achievers. Kind of like the Harvard of the South/Southwest. SMU is more of a rich kid's school where academics may matter, but it doesn't compare to Rice. I would think Tulane falls somewhere in between.

NOT the same land, my friend. I was scared to death when I strolled (in a car) through Rice's projects. We lived in The Woodlands for almost 2 years (2010-2012). My Engineer husband worked on the project to condemn most of the buildings surrounding rice that were inhabited by homeless. If you grew up in Houston you know that they don't have any zoning restrictions out there. It's gone downhill in a bad way since Katrina.

oh... and most from River Oaks fled North to The Woodlands, South to Pearland or Kingwood.

And I would hardly compare anything west of H to Highland park. At least, anymore. Katy is nice, but please.

My Engineer husband worked on the project to condemn most of the buildings surrounding rice that were inhabited by homeless. If you grew up in Houston you know that they don't have any zoning restrictions out there. It's gone downhill in a bad way since Katrina.

You must be confusing Houston with Chicago or somewhere, because there are no projects anywhere near Rice. We went on the visit with my brother to check out the stadium, etc. The reason why everything sparkled to him was because of the academics. One visit to the campus and he was thinking Spokane, WA. (obviously Pre UNT Offer) You're the first person I've ever met that has implied that Houston is an awesome place to live in the past 10 years. And I've lived there. Like, lately.

Rice is by the Medical Center, Hermann Park, Montrose, Museum District the Zoo, etc. One of the richest areas in the state and country and considered the cultural center of Texas. It's about 20 minutes from the Third Ward. Are you trying to say River Oaks isn't nice anymore? Are you stupid? River Oaks is still where 90% of the money in Houston is located. FACT. River Oaks was named in 2011 as the seventh richest block in the COUNTRY. You can't buy a house in River Oaks for under $1,000,000. The median income in Bellaire, the neighboring city to River Oaks has an average household income of nearly six figures and Montrose was named one of the "ten best neighborhoods in America" by the American Planning Association...
