A Spirit Airlines flight initially heading from North Texas to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Tuesday afternoon experienced an "emergency situation" shortly after takeoff and had to turn back.

A spokesperson for Spirit said the captain described a "normal landing" after receiving "indication of a possible mechanical issue," adding the customers "safely deplaned," but some passengers described a much more harrowing experience, CBS station KTVT-TV in Dallas reports.

A text message correspondence between passenger Casey Rogers, who was on the plane, and his wife Ashlee, who was on the ground, showed the fear many passengers felt. Part of one message read, "...I love you make sure my kids know that forever. We have a problem I [sic] the plane it's full of smoke [sic] the engine has stop and te [sic] whole plane is shaking ... I love you don't forget it!! Pray for me."

After a series of frightened back-and-forth messages the passenger sent a text that said, "We are trying to land now." Another text, minutes later said, "We are down we are ok..."

Rogers later elaborated on his experience in a phone call with KTVT.

"I saw the engine blow up on the outside of the plane, fire and all that," Rogers said. "I'm thinking to myself, I see this on the movies. I'm usually on my couch eating popcorn. This never happened to me. And here I am 25,000 feet above the ground and this is happening to me."

Aren't they the Ryan Air of the US? Man, some people give me a hard time for being such an ardent Southwest fan, calling it the bus of the skies, but at least they're friendly about it, embrace who they are, and don't nickel and dime buttrape me at every possible turn. Someday when I regularly wear diamond and ruby encrusted underwear, I'll try out American, but never before that day.

Don't need any more than you need for SW. I regularly find American fares equal to SW on the routes where they compete and where I need to fly.

SW has a great business model. It seems to work quite well for them. When I traveled for a living and was flying around Texas the traveling working folks called SW the "divorced parent airline" in the summer when every Friday and Sunday the planes were packed with "unaccompanied minors" heading out to see mom or dad for the weekend or their mandated two week summer trip! It was a zoo on SW during that time. Fun times!

That's actually really funny since I mail my kid to California every summer and Christmas on Southwest. You're absolutely right about the unaccompanied minors on those flights. Although she's 12 now, so she can fly on her own.

I guess I just love the ease and cheap parking of getting in and out of Love too, although with the demolition of the old terminal, they got rid of my super secret only in the know absolutely free of strollers and carry on hunting rifles security line, which never took more than five minutes to get through. At DFW you need to park off site and rely on a glue huffing shuttle driver to get you to and from the terminal. I don't mind so much outbound, but I really like to be in complete control of my destiny when I come home.

Here's a little known secret about DFW though. If you should find yourself there for a prolonged period of time, there's a place in terminal D called "The Club at DFW." It's up with all the other airline clubs. You can buy a day pass for $35 or go online and get a coupon for a $25 day pass. They have a self serve all you can drink bar of beer and wine, and a bartender who will pour you all you can drink booze along with all you can eat snacks, showers, and for those who care, a smoking room. One year I was flying to California the same day as my kid, but on different flights. She left six hours before I did. I know I got to California that day, but am not 100% sure how I got there. Thanks Club at DFW!

KRAM, you and I are in total agreement on this. I flew them once and I will never fly them again.

THIS IS HOW BAD SPIRIT AIRLINES IS PEOPLE, THEIR TERRIBLENESS HAS LED ME AND KRAM TO COME TO PEACE, LOVE AND SPIRITUAL BONDING OVER OUR HATRED OF THEM.

Go with peace my fellow Spirit Airlines anti prophet, spread word of their terrible deeds far and wide.

Well, sure, but until it brings closure to the FIVE HOOKERS THAT CRAIG JAMES KILLED WHILE AT SMU, it's all kinda moot.
