MGB: Desmon White talks about commitment to UNT

I don't think he's a high risk. If we were bringing him in to play qb then I'd say high risk.

We're bringing him in to contribute which I think he will do. Return specialist to start his career and later could be a guy to get a few carries and/or a few catches a game.

As we saw last year when Jimmerson and Chancellor went down, you need to have a few playmakers to spare.

Anytime you recruit a 5'6", 165 player, it's high risk.

Can his body hold up to the pounding of FBS football? That is the main concern.

We were his only offer.

William Cole was injured at OSU. (Off the field issues at UNT). Would have been a huge success here otherwise.

We waste scholarships every year. Many go to walk-ons. Others go to Mac's friends kids. Most guys, with size, don't ever make it onto the field, let alone to Denton.

You recruit the best player from a national program, period!. If he does not pan out, so what. See sentence above! How can he be a higher risk? You leverage this selection by signing another kid at the same position. Its done every year at every program; since the inception of sports. UNT benefits greatly with the signing of a local favorite than the guys we continue to bring in from Louisiana and other places. Recruit the best local players from North Texas! I'm sure Desmon will end up hosting more than his share of future Desoto prospects.

We were his FIRST offer. Big difference. I am sure that other schools would have and probably still will come calling. He was not getting heavily recruited right now because his size is a concern for the position he is playing. If he were to get seriously injured playing QB for DeSoto then schools don't want to have to honor an offer they could use somewhere else...as it has been said on this board there is a little risk involved with Desmon but the potential rewards far outweigh that in my opinion.

Someone asked why he was a risk. Size is why he is a risk. He and his coach both talk about this freely. its really not controversial. Hopefully it pays off big for us.

Did I mention I like this commit?

I argued that he isn't really that big a risk. His size is a hindrance, but for what we are going to ask from him I don't think it will pose much of a problem.

If we had him at qb it would be a risk, or if we had him at running back his size would make it very difficult to run in between the tackles. But his one job is to be dangerous when he's in the open field and our coaches are going to do what they can to get him the ball in the open field a few times a game. Mainly on returns at least to start out his career.

No one talks about DeSoto's corner back Howard Wilson, 6-2 or 6-3 Louisiana Tech commit. I don't know how solid of a commit he is but I think he has been their best defensive player. Never gets beat and picks off everything. Would love to have him! A true shut down corner.

Let's get him!! They've certainly stolen out of our bread basket before.

Poor O'neil Peterson, star quarterback from Ennis that last minute changed his commitment from North Texas to La Tech.

According to his cousin, Peterson's switching his commitment to La Tech was the biggest mistake that he'd made in his life.

Saw him on Rivals and wondered about him. From your opinion, I hope we are bending his ear.

Isn't this the kid that was getting ZERO looks by D1 schools until UNT stepped up with an offer?

So, now the TCU's of the world like this kid? The same TCU that just went 0 for Oklahoma this season after today's loss to Oklahoma State?
