DT climbs the charts

Recommended Posts

I half-agree. There have been a few times I REALLY didn't like watching Derek play, but the rest of the time has been pretty good. I saw a few dropped catches today that weren't his fault. But I'd rather have a few more of those per game than the pick-6's that lost the Tulane and Ohio games. I still think he's won more for us than he's lost, and when he's on, he's pretty darn good. I hope he has his best games of the year against Rice and Tulsa. We're going to need it.

Had Dodge not burned DT's redshirt for a single series 4 years ago we'd have him back next season. Assuming he kept the starting job, & I think he would, think about his numbers.

Wrong. He took a medical redshirt the following year, making the burned redshirt against A-State a moot point. This would be his last year either way.

Brings up another interesting question:

Is a player ineligible for a medical waiver if the injury occurs before said player had taken a redshirt year? Taft would seem to be the case, or else DT would be eligible for a medical hardship waiver.

A medical hardship waiver is the same as a medical redshirt. The first term is the official terminology, the second is just slang. And yes, DT took one in 2010. That is why he has been able to play for UNT in 5 different seasons.

But you cannot typically take a redshirt one season and a medical hardship waiver in another.

Didn't one of the UH QBs (Keenum?) get both? Isn't that why UNT90 called him "Dr. Keenum"?

I'd say he has more than just an outside shot of getting past Ramsey in 200-yard games. 3 more will make him the leader; unless something bizarre happens, we will likely have a bowl game and there's still a chance at a championship game, so he will probably have at least 5 games left to get 3 200-yarders.

There were not enough people who appreciated what Derek has done here. He really is a good player and, for sure, the type of kid you want in your program.

When we signed him, I openly scoffed at the idea of signing a kid out of Glen Rose with only one other offer, and that from a lower division. But, look, he's made a believer out of me.

And you could certainly count me among the former nay-sayers. The dude has just plain shown up and succeeded.

Yeah and make sure you include Dunbar's record as a starter, too. Dude was waayy overrated.

And, Zach Orr as he chases the tackle record, right?

Crazy how DT is so polarizing to some. I long ago admitted I was wrong about him. Don't understand why others can't.

Derek didn't chose the team around him or the circumstances. Everything he earns and achieves is well deserved because of those of us who didn't believe in him for so long. He's earned the right to have his achievements celebrated.

I see football for what it is: a team game. Derek is one of 26 starters comprising the offense and defense and special teams players (kicker, punter, holder, deep snapper included here). Coach McCarney will be the first to tell you that Derek didn't always have I-A/FBS-level talent around him.

But, you know what, Derek probably wouldn't. The kid never complained, pouted, threw twitter tantrums, transferred, or quit. Many kids in his situation do.

I think you cut this kid and his blood is Mean Green; and, likely Meaner and Greener than most of us. I'm sorry I ever doubted this good, hard-working kid.

Brain fart on my part. Of course he played in the season that he had the redshirt/waiver, hence it HAS to be a medical waiver because he played.

Duh.

I have been one of his most consistent critics, but Derek has been a very pleasant surprise to me this year. He has shown lots of grit and determination. And he has not gotten flustered when he makes the inevitable turnover mistakes. I still would not have him lead my all star North Texas team, but he has my respect for making noticeable changes in his game.

And BTW. Please keep in mind that Steve Ramsey's records were accumulated over three years. In his day you were not allowed to play as a freshman. Back then there was no such thing as a redshirt freshman.....they called them sophomores.

All things considered, Giovanni Vizza's stats are much more impressive than just about any NT QB.

Yes. Keenum's injury came in his senior season, after he had already taken his regular redshirt. I guess the question is could you get a 6 year if the injury occurs before your actual redshirt year.

I assume no.

Once the coaches learned to trust DT (still not a complete process), we saw what DT could do.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for the player DT has WORKED himself into. He has maximized every ounce of talent that god has given him. That is a pretty special thing to see. Anytime. Anywhere.

Now, if the coaching staff will keep trusting him, and with this defense, there is little doubt in my mind that we can win out.

IF the coaching staff keeps trusting DT.
