Not really football related, but another tradition has gone the way of our multi shades of green. Several years ago the university adopted an official class ring and a yearly ceremony was added to honor seniors when they picked them up. This week I saw an ad in the NT Daily with a picture of four different types of UNT rings. The caption read something like, "Now you have your choice of four styles of UNT class rings. Come pick yours out." One of the new styles is similar to the "official" one that was launched several years ago, but one is entirely different and instead of the usual admin building and eagle, there is son of worm. It's not that I don't like son of worm; I just don't understand why our university can't decide on something and stick with it for more than five or six years. Is it because that is the tenure of our administrators?

I'd wager 20 years from now someone will be on one of these message boards asking the same question.

I look back over 40 years now and see so many new faces who came to campus who brought their new ideas with them of which we all got to enjoy the changes that came along with them.

Wonder if anyone ever tried to (dramatically) change a Texas Aggie former student's senior ring? A tweak here and there is fine, but some traditions you might want to respect and leave alone? What would be such a tradition for our school? Someone enlighten me....

I found out from a post last week that some even use different lyrics for our alma mater, ie, Glory To The Green. One might think if they put the lyrics on the Apogee jumbotron every Game Day that we would all be able to figure out on that alone which lyrics our present leadership actually wanst us to use when we sing it?

GMG!

Not again...another thread about "traditions". Ha! Sort of like the uniform thread...these zombies just keep coming back! Ha! We are nothing if not consistent with our threads! Carry on. :goodjob:

Id venture to say that less than 7% of the people working at North Texas know a damn thing about North Texas traditions. The other 93% are working hard to undermine those traditions, since things were so much better at their alma mater (what ever part of the country they are from). Case in point RCMA or whatever the hell it is called.

Mark, Mark, Mark,........who shall I find the most credible in this discussion. Someone who has actually been a decision maker in the athletic department (and a very good one at that) or someone that acts as a .....well.....don't make me say the "S" word here.

I am in grad school and have decided to just get the graduate certificate in light of my new bundle of joy. I now graduate in May. My dad wants to get me a class ring but I feel like it would be odd since it is just a year long graduate certificate. I took over 90 of my under graduate hours at UNT but finished my degree else where. You guys think I should get a ring or would it be wrong?

Silver...Silver...Silver...sticking your 2 cents in on traditions. Why am I not surprised? I see you did not understand it all as well...drex is indicating the other 93% in the university, not just the athletic dept. I quote what he said as you seem to have missed this critical part, "those working at North Texas". AND, how many years ago was drex employed by the athletic dept.?

You know, I worked for the VA some 40 years ago...guess that still makes me an expert on everything going on and what at least 93% of the folks working there now think at the VA these days, right?

And...bottom line here is that drex knows full well that I am just pulling his chain. So, what lovely adjective can I find to describe you with? Always good to see folks using the 3rd grade name calling stuff. It is so mature, but does say something about those who use it as a tactic I suppose.

I would say that making the comment that 93% of the folks working at UNT were of one mind on any issue is going a bit overboard...if you actually tried to understand instead of just wanting to get a gig in at me, then you would probably agree that such generalizations really have no basis in reality! But, that would take actually reading and trying to figure out that I was poking a bit of fun at my friend drex. My guess, he got it!

I think you should do whatever you think is best.

It is simply a shame that will go unattended. Traditions are what bind alumni and students, a glue that UNT is missing, and will continue to miss, with the constant changing of traditions and the general lack of meaningful traditions.

My parents got me a TCU ring when I got my masters but I never lived in the dorms there, was involved on campus, or made real friends. I did all that at UNT and when I am done I will be an Alumni. Rather wear the UNT ring...

I'm sure he was indulging in hyperbole. But having myself worked for the University and my sister worked there as well (for the always quotable resident engineer John Matt Howard) I find his gross exaggerations....not too much.

And third grade name calling? I doubt if third graders know the "S" word I have in mind.

They have changed in size and shape but all the rings going back to 1886 have the Eagle and Shield on the crest, star, olive and laurel branches on one side and canon, saber and rifle on the other. The present design has been in use since 1936. You don't have to read the school name on the crest to know it's an Aggie ring.

This is stupid. When we set the official ring design, we had different tops so you could have the same ring in different styles...everything else was the same. By going back to the way things were before, in essence you aren't getting a North Texas ring, you're getting your own graduation ring with some UNT stuff on it. I know that's what some people prefer, but you know, leave the official ring and if you don't like it, even when we had an exclusive contract with Jostens there were still other places agreeing to make people their own rings with different stuff on them. That makes sense - here's the UNT ring, if you want another, find somebody to make it. Having a ring that was officially sold to you is wildly different than having an official ring. "I bought this through UNT so it's the official UNT ring, just like all of the other ones" (?!)

This still exists. It's called the Ring Ceremony and is run by the Alumni Association. Hundreds of graduates participate and it's a very classy, dressed up event.

That's URCM,sir. And you'd be foolish to think that 93% of the university is run by "outsiders" even that aforementioned department. This campus' staff is primarily made up of UNT grads or current students. Only occasionally at the top do you find people from outside UNT and while I certainly wouldn't agree with all of their decision making, the thought of "well we did it this way where I'm from" has rarely worked here.

Jesse, I'm not sure which side of things you ended on in that paragraph, but there is still very much a standard UNT Ring that is contracted through Jostens. There is some customizing ability available to it, but it is very much the UNT Ring.

This thread made me pull out my old class ring from the class of 1975 (still fits!). I then went to the Josten's link and see there is quite a bit of difference with the new ring. One side of my ring has the class year, then underneath is the admin building with a huge eagle surrounding the building with it's wings. Underneath that is an interlocking NT.

The other side has the degree which in my case was a B.M. Underneath is the university seal and underneath that is the interlocking NT.

The crest shows my fraternity letters below a small diamond.

In retrospect, this looks very gaudy and maybe even a little gay.....not that there is anything wrong with that.

Screw it! I am just going to get a NT interlocking tattoo. That is cheaper than the ring. Be looking for a photo of it come May!

PS I am not joking...

Like I said originally, I think you should do what you want to do. Don't do the Prez thing and abdicate to others a decision tat is yours to make. You can see in this thread where that gets you. An up and make the call....it is your call to make!

I just said I am going with the tattoo. Decision is made. A UNT one will fit right in with all my others.
