So with such a long and bizarre first weekend of college football, we're waiting a couple of extra days for rankings and I looked over some things.

66 FBS teams won this weekend. Of those, 23 won against FCS teams. Only 32 winners were ranked and/or had "big wins" against fellow FBS teams (including us). A few others were not ranked and had moderate wins over FBS teams. Add in the fact that we've had a "pro nod" for a possible bowl game, and I'm thinking we might get a couple of Top 25 votes for the first time since our Dickey bowl runs.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect us to be in the Top 25, but I'm really hoping to see a vote or two. It's certainly been long enough.

Wow, a vote or two? Not so sure about that, but keep up the optimism. I'm all but guaranteeing a win at Ohio, so I guess were in the same club.

Couldn't decide if he was being serious.

Look at the field of winners. After the Top 25, you'll have a few teams with almost enough votes to be in, and then a half dozen or so with 1-4 votes each. It's not like I'm expecting to be ranked above Washington or Oklahoma State or anything. But we were one of the biggest winners in the "also ran" department.

And yes, I'd much rather win this week...and next...and have a good showing the following week. But our win was around the 35-40 most impressive, so getting a vote isn't completely unlikely in such a bizarre week.

Most of the computer rankings have a number for all 127? teams so we will have a ranking whether good or bad. We started the preseason ranked mostly from 98 to 102. We could move up maybe 10 slots because we won by about 25 points above the spread.

While I enjoyed the win, I realize that we were playing a bottom 5 team. Their quarterback and Juco transfers could easily elevate the Vandals several notches but it will take a little while. I believe that the combination of the heat and their not being very deep may have made us look better than we are. Still the desire and effort were there and I believe that we'll see a much better team all season long.

Sorry, should've been more specific...I meant the AP and USA Today poll rankings. And after the weirdness that was this weekend, it's not so much about us "moving up" as it is many others "moving down" with UNT and similarly situated teams shifting up to fill the gap.

Top 25 vote after beating an Idaho team that went 1-11 last year, and predicted to be just as bad this year?

Let's tap the breaks a little. I wouldn't expect to even sniff a vote until NT hits 3-0. And that's a big if...

3 and 0 would get us some votes I think, (some guy in Georgia or hyping us up before the game or something like that). Before that, please don't hold your breath, it would be unhealthy for such a long time.

Earning some recognition is a reasonable early season goal. A few top-25 votes would fill that nicely. My full season goal, and it's reasonable, is to be invited to a bowl.

Idaho is amongst the worst 3-4 teams in FBS right now. Beating them shouldn't get much attention by anyone outside of the teams that beat them. Ohio and Ball State are light years better than Idaho. We did what you are supposed to do to a FBS team you bought a game with--pound them. Obviously, that doesn't always happen, as the FCS wins this past weekend showed, but usually these type of games end in a bigtime whippping when the game involves a bought game between two FBS schools. Those top end FCS schools like NDSU and Eastern Washington (and, yes SHSU) are teams that non-AQs shouldn't ever schedule. As a matter of fact, I think those top FCS schools will eventually see games against FBS schools as home openers dry up. The big AQs will realize that playing Idaho or New Mexico State is as good as a win over EWU or NDSU, without the worry of their talent keeping them in the game. I guarantee you that Texas is really glad that they played NMSU this weekend at home instead of SHSU. If they had trouble with NMSU for a half of a game, Sam Houston might have hung with them for 3 quarters or more.

As for us getting votes, that has no chance of happening. Even wins in the next two games wouldn't get us any votes. And I don't see us winning this week's game on the road. I see Ohio being really ready to bounce back after that pounding at Louisville. They are really good for non-AQs and they will show that this upcoming weekend. Its obvious that we have improved, but I don't see us being ready yet to win this type of game on the road. I think we will win a game or two on the road, but it will be at Tulane or USM, teams that are still really bad.

3-0 won't sniff us any votes. A win a GA might get us A vote.

You go 3-0 and beat Georgia, you're definitely going to be ranked. All of this is moot, of course, because I don't see us doing any of that, regardless of how happy it would make me!

Are you freaking kidding me? 4-0 with a win over a top SEC team and that *might* get as A vote? You clearly don't know how this all works. If we accomplish that, we'll be ranked. Period. However, that won't happen, so it's not worth even discussing. Actually, if we go 3-0 and play Georgia close, then we will mostly still get votes. And, unfortunately, that is pretty unlikely, however not completely unrealistic.

No, I am just realistic. Maybe multiple votes if that were to happen, but we wouldn't be ranked. We are a long ways from the Top 25.
