New Lincoln coach has much to learn

After taking over a 1-9 team, Ramon Flanigan has modest goals for his first season as Lincolns coach.

He simply wants to learn his players names.

Flanigan was hired to replace the fired O.J. Abanishe on April 29. Abanishe went 8-42 over five seasons after being hired to reboot a program that was discontinued in 1960. Lincoln joined the CIAA three years ago.

The process to replace Abanishe was bogged down because of internal issues. That resulted in Flanigans being interviewed for the job a week after spring practices ended.

Flanigan, who had been the offensive coordinator at Mississippi Valley State, was hired and arrived at the Lincoln campus a day before his players left for summer break.

When the team reconvenes next month, Flanigan will have 21 days to put in an offense and a defense and figure out who can do what.

Its a good problem and a bad problem, Flanigan said Thursday during the CIAA Football Round-Up at Winston-Salem State. Every one of our football players gets to come in, and its a fresh start because I honestly dont know them. If you had a player from Lincoln up here, he couldnt tell you a thing about me, because they dont know me.
