This was my first look at a Vandal practice or scrimmage since spring. Just a few thoughts from what my significantly lacking "football eye" observed.

QB: Chalich is clearly #1. There appears to be separation at this position. Chad made a lot of good decisions and threw some very nice passes. He is quite deceptive with his ball-handling skills on the read option. Runs well. Looks to have the best grasp on the offense than any of the others...by far.

Davis played fairly well. McCain is elusive and fast. He made several very poor decisions and seemed to be real antsy in the pocket. Possesses a very serviceable arm.

Right now, I'd say its Chalich's job

RB: Montgomery is fast and elusive. I was really surprised at how well he is doing as a freshman. Its not game time yet...but he seems to have the package. One highlight: He broke free on a pass play down the right sideline and caught a very nice pass for a long touchdown.

Brown ran well. A bruiser.

Parkins had a real nice afternoon. This kid has a motor and looks like he really loves the game.

WR: Dropped several passes. Overall, it looks like we have some nice players at this position. Watson is a lot bigger than I had expected. Not exceptionally fast, but he runs a good route and has good hands. Epps is a burner...real fast and shifty, and good hands. At TE, I was impressed with Homme and Klingenberg (he looks like the most athletic of the bunch).

OL: Jesse was back. The kid is big and physical. Has long arms and good feet. Runs well...I think he will impress. Marboe...well, there's a reason he's on the Remington watch list and it shows.

The OL had its ups and downs today. But, overall, they appear to be less plump than the last several years and seem to run better. Need improvement, however.

DL: Got some nice players here. It looks like we have a good group to rotate at each position. Bradley, Forde, and Keener...studs all!

LB: Nice, solid group. We'll have a good rotation here.

DB: They have me worried. Too many plays over the top. Let the receivers get behind them too often. Nuff said.

Kicker: Struggled on field goals and extra points. Hope this improves!

Other thoughts:

Ran lots of play. Fast paced. Lots of energy. Coaches are constantly "coaching"...nothing goes unnoticed. The team shows a lot of unity. No trash talking. Better team discipline. Only one silly play on defense (personal foul). Need to take care of ball...too many turnovers. Had several dropped passes.

Most impressed:

Chalich's grasp on the offense and his versatility. The D swarms to the ball and wraps up. Montgomery and Brown are going to be really, really good. Jesse Davis, Marboe, and Bradley: seem like to guys who could potentially play on Sundays.
