MOSCOW, Idaho Chad Chalich has sidestepped most questions the last two weeks about how hes performed as Idahos de facto No. 1 quarterback. Instead, hes talked about his offensive line, his receivers, his tight ends, his coaches anyone but him, usually.

But since the first practice of fall camp, hes told reporters variations of the same thing: Were going to score a lot of touchdowns and win a lot of games this season.

He repeated this same line three times Saturday in a four-minute interview. After his superb scrimmage Saturday, it sounded much more convincing.

Chalich completed 19 straight passes, several of them deep throws, to finish a remarkable afternoon in which he threw for 414 yards and accounted for seven touchdowns. Two of his TDs went to his former Coeur dAlene High teammate, Deon Watson.

The redshirt freshmans 19-of-20 passing effort further solidified his spot atop the Vandals depth chart at quarterback. But coach Paul Petrino still wont say who will start Week 1 against North Texas, and he might not reveal the starter before the first game to keep UNT coaches guessing before Aug. 31.

Its not much of a mystery at this point, though.

A quarterback who performs so well (and scores touchdowns) that he is the clear cut leader. Hmmm, how novel.

We gotta be patient though and not expect these kinds of things. If we had the luxury of a QB who had started for a few years, or maybe was entering the third year under our current coach, we'd be able to dream. Alas, we're no Idaho.

I'll be happy when the Idaho game is behind us so that I can read about different teams' practices.

Several hundred fans were on hand as Holtz made Saturdays scrimmage the first open practice session since the first week.

We scrimmaged today and had a great turnout, head coach Skip Holtz said. I am really excited to see all the people that came out to see the team today. Plus it is great for them to have the opportunity to play in front of so many of their family and friends. As far as the scrimmage on the field, it looked like day 15 to me. They are heavy legged, they are tired right now, they are sore right now, there were times where there were some good things and I thought they looked sharp....
