Erick Evans, younger brother of Zed, was added to the roster this week and scored two (2) TD's during the scrimmage today.

He's a mechanical engineer major from Seaogville HS. Lettered 3 years and was named first team all district his senior year.

He's not exactly new but his emergence is something to keep an eye on. We're plenty deep at RB and Jimmerson could be special as our lead guy/workhorse

I believe that he may be the speediest of the running backs. His brother Zed, a safety, is the fastest player on this team having been electonically timed at 7.29 for the 40. Erick averaged around 10 yards per carry his senior season in high school.

Definitely a person to keep an eye on.

7.29? No wonder we have a hard time covering anybody. :)

Pretty sure he meant 4.29, haha. My fastest was a 4.4 but of course that's without pads...since they'd probably double my body weight, I'm guessing 7.29 would probably be my time in full pads :P

His height and weight is?

GMG!

PS: Now that's the kind of speed that took our former conference mate, ie, Boise State to the next level.

Celebrating 100 Years of Mean Green Football....1913-2013

This is North Texas Mean Green star J.T. Smith and a, uh, neighborhood friend. :)

J.T. Smith played for the Chiefs, Redskins and Cardinals and I believe was an All Pro for 1 or 2 years, too. John Thomas "JT" Smith is in the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame.

Wasn't this the young man who started out at the AF Academy?

I found this DRC article on our signing class that mentions him as having "signed" with Air Force, but I never found anything about him being at Air Force.

http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20130207-mccarney-pleased-with-states-reception-of-unt.ece

I think it's going to be confusing finding information about him on the Internet, due to Air Force having had a player there named "Eric Evans" who graduated a couple of years ago after playing quite well. But, even if he just got "signed" by Air Force, he must be a pretty good student/athlete. I use quotes for "signed" because the service academies follow different rules for "scholarships".

The content about his high school career has him playing as a senior in the 2010 season; with him coming here as a "walk on" in Spring 2013, that leaves a year and a half that seems somewhat uncertain, although if he signed with Air Force, I suppose he attended school there; I just can't find anything on the Internet about him actually being there. If someone knows how to do a web search on "Erick Evans" and "Air Force" without returning anything that's "Eric Evans" and "Air Force", that might make it easier.

Shared a smoke with DD while standing on the sidelines at the Fouts' practice fields?

Did he speak to people when smoking? I saw him smoke alone a few times but never around others and definitely not talking. I thought it was his "me time".

I knew about him...weeks before that great game he had in Bolder. Can you guess how I knew about him?

I am indifferent to this ban on public access; have at it. But you know what does not make any sense to me? The ban on Vito/media coverage.

agree on this. Do other schools ban media members at closed practices? I really have no idea.

What ban on media coverage are you talking about. Limited access, yes. But ban, not at all. Otherwise, how has Vito been at practices and talked to the players and coaches?

Let's not confuse perception with facts.

No confusion, maybe I could have just phrased it better.

Are you okay with the amount and type of coverage we are getting?

Hmmm. Well in my ideal world we have the coverage we had a couple of years ago from the AD to supplement.

But it isn't that bad really. I live in another country and I feel like I know what is going on at the major battles. I don't know much about backup MLB or special teams cover teams, but I have a feeling that will be fluid as the games progress anyway.

So, you live in another country and obviously COULD NOT attend a practice or scrimmage if you wanted to,... yet feel compelled to criticize when it's brought up by others who could attend?

I'm not bagging on you, just trying to understand you?

You know what makes me smile every time this closed practice crap comes up? Well, the fact that anyone can go watch outside the fence on the little hill side and see pretty darn well. In fact some did just that at the last scrimmage...even some of the invited guests as the view was better than on the sidelines in some cases. So, if one was so darn fired up about watching practices, why are they not doing so? Do they want to rub elbows with the coaches and staffers they criticize constantly...probably not. Do they want to talk to players? How does one do that at practice? Want to chat...catch 'em on the way to and from practice. Do they want to learn who the players are? No rosters available and you can see just fine outside tat fence. So, I am really puzzled as to why this is such a problem. If the practices were really closed, they would take place inside Apogee not on an open field where anyone can walk up and watch.

Seems practices are pretty darn open after all. Not officially, I get it. But, for those who enjoy going to watch practices at 4pm on weekdays...when they can't seem to make events that start at 6pm on weekdays....they really are free to do so. Amazing that here are o many fans...countless in numbers no doubt...that have the time to watch 4pm practices on a regular basis. Do we have that many retired and/or unemployed fans?

So, why not go for it instead of just complaining about it? One wonders if they want to actually watch practice or simply to complain about not being able to do so...when they really could. You know...only at North Texas.

Just seems humorous to me, but it is just my opinion and everyone is certainly free to form their own on the subject...as we have seen so often.

You know..all we need to do is open practices officially and we would fill Apogee every game with season ticket holders and the Mean Green Club would have hundreds of new members. Who cares if UNT wins any games, we just have to get those practices open to the public! Now, that right there is what's important.

And to answer a previous question about what other schools do...no, not all have open practices. What OSU was doing the last time I was there was to open practice for the first hour when they did drills, and then shoo everyone out when they got down to the "real" part of practice. Like UNT, they practiced outside the stadium in a fenced in facility. Guess what...closed but one could stand 2-3feet further away, but outside the fence and watch the closed practice...just like one can at UNT. I heard no complaining about the closed practices! It's like UNT90 is fond of saying...only at North Texas.

Stupid me. I keep coming back to this thread thinking it will be more info about Erick Evans.

Me too...

I heard that Erick is possibly one of, if not the fastest backs we have. I read on here where he is a return specialist? Hopefully he can fill ar least two areas of need.

We have plenty of quality, solid backs, but we need one that is dangerous with take it to the house speed. At minimum, a change of pace back.

The scrimage is the first time hearing of him, so he may not get too far up the depth chart, but then again, he must have shown something early because he was able to play and score twice.

Never went to practices when I was working on campus and could walk over either. Or when I was a student and lived on campus.

I did, however, attend the spring games when I could. And the kickoff cookout.

If they did an event like the spring game during fall practice, I would attend (assuming I was in the area). But just sit and watch position drills and such, nah.

More clear?

Do you see the thread started by OldGuy about watching the games in Lewisville? I don't care one ounce about watching games in Lewisville for several reasons, but Im not going to comment on it. Why? Because it doesn't effing concern me. I'm keeping my nose out of that subject...because it doesn't concern me. It concerns others,... but not me.

What concerns me is our program growing in every way possible and very little effort being done about it, ....to where, unlke at countless other places where they have hundreds, even thousands show up for their kickoff event, less than 100 people show up for our's.

I know RV noticed, I talked to him anout it Saturday. I think he's stuck between a rock and a hard headed individual. So I'll keep posting and suggesting how we can improve in this area and anyone who doesn't like it can either use the ignore button or stick it.
