Of course my favorite "North Texas Size of Player" story concerns another Mean Green NFL #1 draft choice the year after Mean Joe Greene was drafted #1 by the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers.

This for all you newbies:

U of North Texas frosh' Cedric Hardman was 5' 10" 185pounds when he first enrolled at UNT. By his senior year, Cedric had grown to 6' 5" approx. 240 and would be drafted #1 in the NFL draft by the 49'ers. He was in the Pro Bowl around 8 or 9 years in a row and still has the all time SF 49'ers total sacks record. If he had played for any NFL team in New York he would have been elected to the NFL Hall of Fame his first year to be elgible for that. Not sure why he isn't in it today other than all the politics involved.

So...........size doesn't matter when you first enroll at UNT because you going to get bigger before you leave town! Ask former Mean Green and NFL great Cedric Hardman!

Welcome To Mean Green Country...Darin Kyle!

PS: Gol' darn that's a great looking football stadium in the 'DK' video! :)

A good LS is one of the most under appreciated positions.

Find a good one, and you're spoiled without even knowing it.

Just like the Mean Green had with the recently graduated Troy Kokjohn.

I may be one of the only fans who follow the long snapper, and believe the position is a critical one...best long snappers are usually those few people know...if you hear about a long snapper it is usually due to a mistake that "cost" the team. Too bad, as what these unsung and often under appreciated players do is so critical to special teams...and the team in general...success!

Welcome aboard young Mr. Kyle.

Young Mr. Dunham will follow in Troy Kokjohn's footsteps and will do just fine. Book it Mean Green fans!

Was this ever confirmed ?

Yes it was. Darin will be a preferred walk on at North Texas. Watch out though...this kid is pretty special and has room to grow. He could end up on scholarship at center before all is said and done.

Great kid and family. Welcome to The Mean Green Family Darin!

Made it back home this afternoon, a little sluggish, maybe the long drive combined with coming down from last night. What a game!! The young man is really looking forward to being part of the University and the Team, and as a parent I have to say I honestly am too. I just wanted to say thanks again to Tony, Harry, and their entire crew for being absolutely the most gracious hosts to complete strangers. You made us feel like we had known you for years. Looking forward to many more times.

Houston Klein used to be on my HS alma mater's football schedule back in the day and before they grew lights out as an ISD.

Coach McCarney used to recruit Texas for Hayden Fry when they were all at U of Iowa and I trust Coach Mac's ability to identify talent most all of the time. Of course, there will always be exceptions for any coach to not get em' all right.

Early on when Fry left North Texas for Iowa, they had to have coaches who could identify future NCAA FBS level talent since the Hawkeyes were rarely in the Top 75 rankings of recruiting classes. Of course, that would change after Fry's Year 3 at Iowa when he took his team to the Rose Bowl. Year 3 seems to always been a lucky year for Fry's football teams....hopefully it will be for his coaching tree product here in Mean Green Country, too.

Back To UNT Recruiting:

I think all of us so-called recruiting experts :) may have judged and underestimated Coach Mac's first 2 classes a bit too quickly using Rival'esque stars (attained at a HS level) as our own barometers for success or what we may have thought would be failure if they didn't (in our opinions) have near enough.
