Hoping for Rice. Large public vs small private. Houston vs the metroplex. 2 good marching bands going back and forth.

Plus, they have pedigree. Lord forbid UTSA ever becoming anything other than a school we beat the crap out of EVERY time we play them and with whom we regret association.

The MOB is not a marching band. They are a musical extension/expression of Rice University's (at least the student body of Rice) view of the world....political or otherwise. I think they see themselves as the musical manifestation of the Harvard Lampoon. I don't think the MOB would even acknowledge the existence of the Green Brigade, except to possibly point out how absurd the name might sound to them, much less "go back and forth" with them.

I agree with UNT90...a rivalry should mean something every year, and each game should be a toss up...we need to beat the piss out of UTSA every time we play them

I have said before and will stay with it here - Middle Tennessee.

There is some bad blood there over the past few years. NT may have humiliated MTSU in the past but there was at least one year they ran up the score on NT.

Only at UNT would we set our fan sights as low as UTSA...

I imagine that UTEP and Rice fans are saying the same thing about the possibility of a rivalry with us. Their butts in our seats, and their money in our coffers looks pretty much the same to me. And if they care enough about driving up to Denton, and making a lot of noise at the game.......so much the better.

I voted for Rice. We have basically a 100 year head start on UTSA. We need to beat the snot out of them for at least the first few years in C-USA. Rice is a former SWC member and is located in Houston. The teams from DWF and Houston should always be the top Texas rivalry in C-USA. Rice has some momentum after winning their bowl last season. We need to step up and compete.

I'll take this a step further and rank the rivalries:

1. Rice

2. LA Tech

3. UTEP

4. UTSA

5. S. Miss

6. MTSU

I'll bet you the greased stained finger UTSA fans show up about like the FAU fans did at Apogee.

If it ain't free and 10 minutes away, they ain't coming.

We had close to 26k the last time we played Rice, and that was at Fouts.

And your right, Rice probably does feel the same way about us. But I choose to aspire while anyone wanting UTSA is choosing to despire (is that even a word?).

But, that is kinda what we do here, isn't it?

The question wasn't about sights. Difference between where we want to be and where we realistically think we are.

Not really.

The question was "Who will BECOME our biggest CUSA rival."

Definitely a future tense in that question.

Rivalries=competitiveness. Choosing UTSA means you are willing to accept being one of the worst teams in CUSA for several years to come.

That is just simply not an option (or shouldn't be) for this program.

100 days. Can't wait to tailgate!!

I see your point. I was reading the poll title vs the thread title. ("be" vs. "become", respectively). Right or wrong, I interpret "be" to be shorter term.

I'm right there with you on tailgating. 34 days til that.

LOL! Yes, 34 days. It just seems like 100.

Or people could be looking at it from the perspective that it is likely that both of our programs will benefit from the association in CUSA. Personally, I like the coaching staff they have in place at UTSA. I think they will be competitive quickly. We're both huge state Universities on the I-35 corridor that are projected to continue growing at a rapid rate in the next decade. Great road trips for both fanbases. Much more in common with them institutionally than UTEP and Rice, both of which I'm happy to play every year as well.

I'm thinking that the games that we play against them in the future (not sure how far) are likely to become games of consequence within CUSA. I think NT & UTSA are the two schools in CUSA West with the most upside...by a wide margin.

Good point, SilverEagle. We really can't pick a rival, these things just happen naturally- if they happen at all. I like San Antonio and Houston but have never been to Ruston nor have I ever had a single reason to go there. If I had my choice of a rivalry, therefore, it would be a at a school that is in a fun place to visit.

I've never heard any Tech fans say anything negative in regards to North Texas

Amended Twice Since Posting The Original:

Had your hearing checked lately, techdawg88? :) And......uh......you can always start with Hog Dawg as one of our non-fans.

My, uh, discomfort  with your school first came in 1977 when we went over to Ruston that Fall, schooled yall in that football game to the tune of 41 to 14 and then La Tech gets an Independance Bowl invite a mere few weeks later? NOTE: In fact, I believe North Texas had even been ranked as high as #16 in a poll that same season. I guess the Indy' bowl folks forgot that part, too. because I assure you La Tech had not been ranked in any NCAA D1 poll that or any other season during that era.

Just 1 year before we had travelled approx. 20,000 fans down to UT-Austin to play the Longhorns off their hooves so surely

the Indy' Bowl people knew that North Texas would travel well. And our being hours away from Shreveport more of our

fans would have stayed in their hotels with some doing a a little gambling in their casinos with La Tech fans merely going back to their homes which I'd bet most of which were within a 1 hour radius of Shreveport.

techdawg88, all that a long time ago but I assure you there are still some on this forum today who still have

a very bad taste in their mouths over that total act of inter-collegiate injustice. I mean come on now, you don't invite a team

that has a good reputation of travelling well and had beaten the other team that got the bowl invite, uh, 41 to 14?

I don't believe Shreveport/Bossier even had casinos in the 70s

Although they weren't on the ballot, I might have chosen Southern Miss. They have the best football record over time of any CUSA team. We don't have a lot of history together but I believe that they own a one-game advantage over us. We will be in the same division beginning in 2014 and I hope that our game every year is for the division championship. Yes, I know that LaTech will be a threat each year as well but for now I consider USM #1.
