So on my way to sushi last night, I stopped into the Oak Street Ale House just to look around. I didn't have time to order anything, but I've got to say the place itself completely lives up to the billing that people have been posting on here. It looks like they have an amazing selection of beers, and the people, customers and employees alike, seemed really great!

Onto Keiichi, If you're into eating raw fish, this place is the best I've had in Texas.

This guy flies his fish in daily from New York and Japan. The menu changes daily based on what he can get. While he certainly does have rolls on his menu (we had smoked salmon with avocado), if your idea of going out to sushi is eating the rainbow dragon wizard volcano roll, this place ain't for you.

This guy just gets really good fish, cuts it up with surgical precision, puts it on a plate, and gives it to you with his own hand ground wasabi. I had beef tataki, salmon skin salad, and sashimi plate with salmon, tuna, baby yellowtail, flounder, and sea trout along with the aforementioned roll.

Oddly on his menu are some Italian based dishes like mushroom pasta and lasagna. He worked in a 5-star Italian restaurant at some point and brought some dishes with him. It's weird to see people finish a plate of fish topped off by a serving of tiramisu.

It's definitely spendy. With tip and a couple drinks each, it was pushing $150 for two, so not an everyday kind of place. Also, it seats about twenty, so if you want to go on a weekend, you need to make reservations about two weeks in advance.

Finally, I did notice that while his standards are very high, he's definitely aware of his audience in Denton. There was nothing on the menu that I would consider "challenging," like urchin roe or sea squirts. Pretty much just fish.

One small point of clarification - the bar is named: Oak St. Draft House & Cocktail Parlor.

And if you like great craft beer just wait a couple more weeks when East Side Social Club opens just a few hops from Oak St. (Corner of Austin & Oak.)

In less than 500 feet you will have over 150 craft beers on tap between the two places. With no overlap.

Denton may have to change its name to craft beer Nirvana.

I see what you did there. But yeah, it's not just Denton. The whole country is undergoing a craft beer revolution. The stuff I can get today is magnitudes of order better than anything I could get ten years ago. I am loving this national development.

Dude...old guy...you really need to get that name right!!! Come on! Too bad you didn't have time for a beer...maybe for the first game of the year you will...you won't regret it!

The owner is a north Texas supporter...stoked aboht the new spots..the paint job is decorated with green rhombuseses...

Dude! John was telling me that East Side is going to specialize in a selection of 50 different whiskeys to distinguish itself from OSDH&CP (by the way, how awesome is it to own two bars in town less than a block from each other??).

So with OSDH&CP, East Side Social Club, the newly opened Mulberry St. Cantina which specializes in dozens of different tequilas, plus the ever amazing finisher that is Paschall's, how can we ever go wrong with drinks in this town again?!? (like we ever did, though, I am looking at you Public House and Treehouse...)

Lake Dallas, Corinth, Hickory Creek, State Troopers, all laying speed traps in a four mile section. Then again, there's always my favorite resort and spa, the Royale Inn.

Anyway, I'm curious about salmon skin salad. I'm usually a try-anything-at-least-once kind of guy, but that's one of the few things I've never had the urge to test out. I like squid, octopus, and seaweed salads though, so thus far the sushi-restaurant salads have been okay in my book. What's it like? Chewy, stringy, dry, salty...?

Salty, crunchy. Not to make the taste like chicken comparison, but have you ever roasted a chicken and tasted the skin? If you've seasoned it, it's kinda' salty and crispy? That's what salmon skin is like, only it tastes like salmon, not chicken. Really, it's one of least challenging things I've had in a sushi joint. It just sounds bad because "skin." Done right, it's really good.

My big thumb does not work on Ipad sometimes, sorry for the -1. Anyway great choices on your trip.The tacos at Sabrocita are really good as well as their other dishes. However, on Saturday and Sunday mornings, they do not serve breakfast even though they are open 24 hours on the weekend. You can get their regular tacos along with the rest of the menu, but don't plan on getting chorizo, bacon, huevos rancheros, migas, etc.

Think I will head to Oak St. now.

I took your advice and tried salmon skin - not as a salad, but in a roll. You're right, it's pretty great, but I wonder if it's as strongly salty in the salad as it was in my roll. The first couple of bites were okay, but after that I wished I had somebody to split it with because it was almost overpowering. Though to be fair, aside from my Jim Beam/Dr. Pepper cocktails, I usually stick to a diet that's extremely low in sodium. So when I eat anything salty, it has way more of a kick than it used to. But flavor-wise, aside from the saltiness, it was awesome and tasted very much like smoked salmon.
