The football gods have hardly dealt Jameill Showers the best of hands. One might say the bright, talented young quarterback is due a break or two. Or three.

Smiling, shrugging, Showers said, "I've taken some blows."

Showers has never complained, never stopped working, never considered not making the most of each situation.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound quarterback with the strong right arm is now on the UTEP campus, hoping for better fortunes ... ready to work hard to earn those fortunes ... eager to make those good fortunes work for the Miner football program.

The run of rough luck is in the rear-view mirror now. But it began in high school.

Showers was an honorable mention All-State performer as a junior for Killeen Shoemaker, passing for 2,150 yards and 22 touchdowns and running for another 513 yards. Like every young athlete, he was excited for his senior season at the central Texas high school.

"I broke my collarbone in the scrimmage before the first game of the season," he said.

But Showers made the most of the situation, worked hard, graduated from high school early and signed a National Letter of Intent with Texas A&M. He started classes in the spring semester of 2010. He redshirted his first college season, then won the backup spot behind Ryan Tannehill as a redshirt freshman in 2011. Tannehill was drafted in the first round (eighth overall) by the Miami Dolphins and Showers appeared to be the next Texas A&M quarterback.
