Mean Green Nation,

While my platoon has been rocking Helmand Province with epic amounts of rocket artillery, we missed out on a historic event- Sharknado. We just heard about this movie and we are fanatical about horrible cinema. Does anyone know how to get ahold of this?

If you're actually serious about your request, it comes out the first Tuesday in September and stars 90210-er Ian Ziering. If you can't get it from over there, PM me in late August/early September and I can order it for you. I'm a bit of a "movie whore" in that if something catches my attention, I have to watch it, no matter how bad it is (like The Black Hole with Judd Nelson, or Dracula 3000 with Casper van Dien and Coolio). So if you need me to get it for you, I may just buy it, watch it, and then send it to you.

I would think the government would be able to get it for them. Not sure why.

Is this supposed to be a comedy/horror flick ala Scary Movie? Seriously...a tornado with sharks?

This kind of thing isn't really set up like a spoof, but more just like old, bad drive-in flicks. There's a ton of it out there, usually featuring a has-been actor with a recognizable name. The Sci-Fi (sorry, SyFy) channel makes a lot of them, but there are quite a few that see a limited theatrical release or just go straight to DVD with small budgets. They're so bad they're funny, but not really intended as comedies aside from the corny one-liners they throw in. In that sense, they're kind of making fun of themselves, but some come across as actually trying to be a serious movie which makes them even funnier.

Okay, so I haven't seen this yet but it came out last Tuesday. Is there still a shortage of Sharknado in Afghanistan, or did you get a copy? I can send one over if necessary. And for everyone else, the cult following has gotten big enough that you can pick it up pretty much everywhere (DVD, Netflix, etc.).

Woop, you beat me to it. It's all good! I'm actually in the middle of watching it right now. Surprisingly good quality for such a ridiculous movie. The acting and effects aren't as awful as in most flicks like it. I mean, it still has the whole "oh, come ON!" quality to it, but you can tell they actually put in some effort to make it enjoyable instead of most of the crappy product in the genre. Kind of like Snakes on a Plane, it's intended to be kinda bad but they tried to make it watchable.
