Boone Feldt, one of UNTs top recruits from its 2012 recruiting class, has given up football due to lingering shoulder and neck injuries.

Head coach Dan McCarney confirmed today that Feldt decided to give up football during the off-season.

The move is not a surprise and is something I had been meaning to ask McCarney about. I had the chance today when I ran into him while working on our football preview magazine.

The last time McCarney talked to Feldt, he was trying to decide whether to stay at UNT and continue going to school or transferring to Texas Tech, which also has the program he is majoring in.

It's probably a no.

But if a player never plays do we recieve an extra scholarship?

Or just open an extra roster spot

You only get 85 schollies max.

As for per class, you get 25 scholarships per class. If you don't sign 25 in a class you get however many short you were extra the next year. For example, we signed 22 this year, so we could sign 28 for this year's class.

My point through that was I think if he had quit before our last signing day we would have been able to fill his scholly in the subsequent class. I'm not sure about that and it's a moot point anyway, but oh well. Good luck Boone.

Hate to lose him, but long term health is more important. I would bet he transfers to Tech since his Dad is the new hesd coach at Odessa Permian, about 2 hours south of Lubbock. And a 3 star to boot!
