One of my buddies works for Monarch Nation. He's doing a Q & A with all the the Conference USA teams. He's trying to help the ODU fans get more familiarized with all the new schools. Here's some questions :

1. North Texas joined Conference USA on July 1 along with several other new members. Previously UNT was a member of the Sun Belt. What do you see as the biggest positives and negatives of the move for the school?

2. How did North Texas' athletics teams get the name "Mean Green?"

3. Discuss some of the points of pride (championships, All-Americans, etc.) of Mean Green athletics in the past.

4. How do you see the upcoming 2013-2014 season shaping up for football and basketball?

5. While football and basketball are the two most popular sports, Conference USA will field strong programs in other sports (e.g., men's soccer, baseball). What Olympic sports do you see UNT excelling in the conference?

6. The University is located in Denton, Texas. For a fan base used to conference teams based on the east coast, what are some attractions in the Denton area?

7. Lastly, who do you think will develop into the Mean Green's main rivalry? How familiar is the UNT fan base with the other new schools on the eastern part of Conference USA (ODU, Charlotte, Marshall, etc.)

I've got answers for all, but would like to hear everyone's input. I'd like to add on or post better responses If you have them

Thanks in advance

Would really like input on 2 & 6

RE: No. 6, I must admit some writer's block.

For a town so endearing to me, I have a hard time explaining it to outsiders.

Good food, cheap cost of living, proximity to Dallas/FW, musicmusicmusic and my Mean Green

I'll give it a shot NT03,

1a. Positives: Perceived improved conference affiliation. The Mean Green are guaranteed to play in N.O. this year. Closer regional rivals. Higher conference payouts. Good baseball conference :D

1b. Negatives: the possibility of getting our rear-ends handed to us on the gridiron & hardwood. Other than that, I got nothing.

2. http://www.unt.edu/northtexan/archives/w04/mean.htm

3. Very slim here. Joe Greene, Don January, Abner Haynes, Cedric Hardman, 2001 - 2004 N.O. Bowl run.

4a. Football: Expectations are low. Hopes are always high! There is no-one in C-USA that should scare UNT. We should be able to compete from day 1. However, QB and D-line are question marks.

4b. Basketball: Expectations are low. Hopes are always high! There is no-one in C-USA that should scare UNT. We should be able to compete from day 1. However, coaching is a question mark.

5. Ladies Soccer, mens golf, ladies tennis

6. Denton is the diamond that sits atop the "Golden Triangle". Anything you like in Dallas/Ft.Worth/Arlington is all about a 30 min drive away. Plus, Denton itself is a wonderful town with strands of small-town feel, college-town feel, and suburbia feel. The Denton Square is a fantastic city square with a beautiful courthouse and all kinds of mom-&-pop stores all around.

7a. (...Mean Green's main rivalry?) Probably one of the new schools in the West (LATech/UTSA), with a possibility of UTEP. UNT will carry over a pretty strong rivalry with MTSU as well.

7b. (How familiar is the UNT fan base...) Not very. We'll be familiar with FIU/FAU, & MT. We know of Marshall & So Miss. We know of the schools that are only with us for 1 year as well (and we know Tulsa well). The other schools in the East that are moving up/transitioning to FBS are not really known to UNT.

You could always just give him the link to CW's recent write-up...that pretty much covers most of it for me...
