Is there anything unique about them or are they just good? I've probably never met a nacho I didn't like BTW.

This is off Rooster's menu:

Pulled Pork Nachos

Queso • Shredded cheese • Smashed beans • BBQ sauce • Jalapenos • Mexican pico • Chips

We were often the only English speakers. Great salsas. Get an al pastor torta, add a barbacoa taco if you are hungry. Peacock would say lengua taco instead, but I don't care for lengua.

I always liked their picadillo.

New York Sub Hub

I prefer Matzatlan over matador. Their enchiladas are the real deal. Or at least they remind me of the food back home.

I used to love Denton County Hamburger, and Bari's but they no longer exist in Denton.

I need to get up there more to explore the new food stuffs.

There is still a Denton Co. Hamburger. It is located on Sunset and still run by the original owners.

Thai Ocho on Malone near University is also very good for Thai food.

And really, this town is going through a bit of a restaurant renaissance, save for the abomination of a Subway that will open soon on the Square. Damn them and their inappropriate encroachment of our hollowed ground retail space.

If I remember right, an upmarket Mexican restaurant was originally supposed to be there and I was a bit excited about it. My guess is that the deal went sour (not like a bad mafia flick, but still bad), so the property owners asked for someone, anyone to take the spot, and I guess Subway had the better bid.

But good god, a Subway on the square is pretty ridiculous. Odds are that only the people who don't know the restaurants will go there, but I don't imagine it'll last very long. I don't mind Subway, but that place doesn't really belong on the square.

Also, good to see Oak Street getting props here. It's overshadowed my old drinking place of choice (Riprocks) for about a year or so because of the selection and the atmosphere. Good drinks without the horrible overcrowding.

I was only back in town for a couple days last year so I can't add much new stuff, but if they're all still there these are my go-to places:

Sandwiches-I agree with New York Sub, but if you want a cheesesteak that tastes like a real Philly one Lenny's is the top spot now that there is no Texadelphia.

BBQ-Rudy's. I tried a few different locations while traveling over the years and they all taste just a bit different!

Italian-Giuseppe's. Not only good stuff, but they do a lot of fundraisers and stuff too.

Mexican - Sweetwater and El Guapo's. If you didn't know and/or have been gone for a while, El Guapo's is where Mercado Juarez used to be and is run by the guy that was the GM at the Denton Tia's for almost forever.

Pizza-Tomato was great but even the new location is gone now. TJ's is perfect "drinking pizza", nice and greasy when you need it. When they first turned into a bar (also gone now) they had some awesome gourmet pizzas until their chef died. So J&J's would probably be the best "local" bet.

Asian-Chopsticks was already good, but even better after adding sushi.

Other-Abbey Inn and Green House. I only went to Abbey a couple times right after they opened, which was right before I moved, but what I tried was damn good. Green House always had the best unique fare in town.

Drink-geez, what's still open? Cool Beans has awesome bean burgers that go well with anything you're drinking. Not sure how cool it is now that it's a miniature version, though! Loophole is pretty good too. Best country fried steak in town. I have a hard time talking about drinking without including food too, just because I love to eat so much.

Edit: I have to try Rooster's...truffle mayo? I might have to make it at home just to see what it's like.

And this one....

And when you talk about places to drink in Denton, other than an occasional trip to The Square, where else would you go besides Fry Street?

One place in particular...good ol' Lucky Lou's.

I may be a defector but I had some fun times in Denton.

I don't know what Crooked Crust is-maybe it showed up after I left Denton? But yes, you're right, Curves is definitely a good addition.

Agreed Cougar King, Lou's is spot on -- made it there on a rain pre-game day a couple of years ago and had a great time. Great feeling of old fry street you feel in that place. Also tried Crooked Crust last season and it is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. BTW -- has anyone tried the macaroni place across the street yet? What's the verdict?

I miss The Juicy Pig. Hell, I even miss Goode and Iolas.
