If beasly is the lowest Mitchell could get then I will take it. Beasly has been a solid contributor and if that is the worst Mitchell can do he is looking pretty good.

Akol was listed at 6'10 so he was an inch taller than Mitchell. There are PF that are much bigger in the NBA than Akol.

Look, I'm not really disagreeing with the fact that he's not a good on the ball defender, just that he's going to be going against much bigger guys every night. I went through the pf's in the nba and 13 were above 6'9" and some of those never see the court. So, he's not going to be up against taller pf's often.

Couldn't help it, below are the pf's above 6'9". 7 in the east and 6 in the west. The southwest would be the hardest on him, but like I said, he won't see them very often.

Matt bonner spurs, Craig brackins and arnette moultrie 76ers, jajuan Johnson and Thomas Robinson rockets, Vernon me kiln and Charlie Villanueva pistons, markieff Morris suns, miles plumlee pacers, shavlik Randolph celtics, trey thompkins clippers, jan vesley wizards and finally dirk. Only dirk at 7' and plumlee and Villanueva at 6'11" we're above 6'10".

There are literally too many to list that you didn't list...

I think this is the best projection I've seen thus far:

http://nbadrafttiers.com/draft-analysis-tony-mitchell/

Strengths

  • Excellent athleticism – length, quickness, and strength
  • Deep range on his shot
  • Good shotblocker
  • In and out of area rebounder

Weaknesses

  • Very inconsistent effort
  • Poor passer
  • Raw offensively
  • Production dropped from his freshman to his sophomore year
  • Played against poor competition at North Texas
  • Tweener forward, but he could athletically play both forward positions

Ceiling: Thaddeus Young

Floor: NBDL

Paul Gasol, Dirk, Chris Bosh, Kevin Love, and David lee are all bigger than Mitchell.

I used yahoo sports to look them up and selected the pf's, the ones you listed are labeled as fc's. point taken though.

Why do so many want to disparage Tony? The guy has represented the university well and all some want to do is tear him down.

Amen. Tony has been a class act from day 1!

It was something started in the season to take the blame off of the current coaching staff, and has disgustingly continued as the lone representative of UNT basketball EVER (or at least the last 40 years) to be considered for a 1st round choice has made his way through NBA assessment camps.

I wonder where the whisper rumors were generated and why....

Nobody is disparaging Mitchell. I think legitimate concerns were raised about his effort and they have been echoed by NBA Scouts. I don't see that as trying to take the blame off of the current coaching staff, just calling it as some of us see it and again, confirmed by a professional scout. Mitchell is a once in a lifetime talent for us, but don't let your unhealthy hatred of the coaching staff blind you to some of his weaknesses. Listening to you, you would think Mitchell was perfect 100% of the time.

I think there have been some pretty disparaging remarks just in this thread. See below, these are not critiquing his game, but flat out disparaging.

that disparages; tending to belittle or bring reproach upon: disparaging remarks.

TM is a lazy defender if you can even label him as a defender. No hustle back, and no real will to guard anyone. Just watch his NBA Draft film. He loves to block, but has zero interest in guarding.

Not sure how one can block shots and not be considered a defender, but we can agree to disagree here.

effort? is that in his vocab?

This one is pretty harsh for a guy who blocked more shots in a season and a half than anyone who has ever suited up for the Mean Green. I thought that getting up and blocking a shot required effort, but I am no basketball expert.

I am not saying that Tony doesn't have holes in his game or is perfect, but it seems that the people laying the blame for the season we had squarely on Tony's shoulders is a bit misguided. He was a great player for us and gave people a reason to even be interested. To say that it is his fault and not look at the coaching staff at all is just plainly ignoring the facts. Could Tony have played better and helped us win a few? Sure. Could the coaching staff have helped him out by putting him in position to be successful? Yes. Both sides need to come more to the middle here and lay some blame on both sides and maybe even on some of the other guys who touched the basketball during the season.

I would agree the second comment was over the top, but the first comment was just reiterating what the NBA analysis stated and showed. Look, I want Mitchell to have an incredible pro career, but there were times when he allowed his frustration to take over or looked lost on defense. It is what it is. The scouts will pick apart his game because they are investing a lot of money in someone and need to be as correct as possible.

So NBA scouts said that you cannot call him a defender? I don't think they use that kind of language. It may be based on what the scouts have said, but we choose to use language that equates to "he is terrible" instead of "here are some places that he could improve." These types of comments on not constructive criticism. I just don't understand why we insist on tearing down our own.

I know what you are saying, but I think what Grant.UNT was saying, and I would agree, is that there is a difference in guarding someone on the ball and hanging out around the rim and swatting shots. Maybe he didn't say it in flattering terms, but as I said earlier, it is what it is and I wish Tony all the success in the world going forward.

Right, there were no whisper rumors about off the court activity that supposedly... somehow... affected his on court performance. There was no over the top blame on Mitchell because he couldn't figure out how to beat a triple team.

I guess your "the past is the past" stance doesn't allow remembrance of those in season threads where some pretty hateful stuff was thrown TM's way.

I hope he goes #1 in the draft because that is good for North Texas and good for Tony Mitchell. Its amazing how some think those 2 things are mutually exclusive.
