I know most people thought him being drafted would be great pub for our school, but every article seems to bash us as the reason why Mitchell didn't do as well as he should have.

You mean every writer outside of our fan base is honest? How novel.

So now you are admitting that even under Johhny he did not flourish? Johhny was a good coach but Mitchell never prospered here... Not under Johhny and not under Benford.

He only played 2 thirds of his freshman season, and probably took half of that time to even get in true game shape. He had no preason workouts with the team or anything.

Not to mention, i do think he improved from his first couple of games to the end of that season.

Gee, I don't know.

After a year under JJ...pretty much a consensus that he was a lottery pick.

A year under Bumford...pretty much a consensus that he might go late in the first round.

Matt Barkley returned for his senior year, didn't go through a coaching change, yet still managed to find his draft stock plummet. Is that possible?

Oh, because he's evaluated with more of a fine-tooth comb during that additional year picking apart the flaws in his game.

That's why this argument needs to be put to bed. From the distance we are all at, it's not worth debating - both sides can be made.

Perhaps I missed Tony's shoulder injury. You know, because throwing the basketball is his main job.

Oh, he didn't have one?

So averaging a double-double and over 3 blocks/game is not flourishing/prospering?

What is "flourishing" or "prospering"?

I didn't watch USC closely this year. Did 97% of Matt Barkley's teammates regress this season as well?

Valid criticism.

Player development is part of coaching. Benford failed miserably with a 1st round talent.

Why wouldn't we be criticized?

Pretty much. They underachieved as much our basketball team did, if not worse.

The point being that the article said "the past few years," i.e., apparently including his time with J.J.

Well, of course they put us down. We had one of the best talents in the NBA draft. We didn't even bother to use him correctly and half the time Benford wouldn't even START the same guy. I brought my Dad to the UNT/UTA game and he was like "Where's this Tony Mitchell guy you speak so highly of?"

I think Tony Mitchell's situation may very well be a dagger in our basketball team's future.

UNT's basketball program...Benford'd

There's no perfect comparison, but similar to TMitch, Barkley was tasked with leading a team with high expectations entering the year. They both found their teams decimated by injury and under-performed themselves. With the increased scrutiny, flaws in their game were exposed.

My point was simply that placing all the blame on Benford is irresponsible as Barkley didn't have a coaching change to blame.

Logic does not work here.... We only deal with emotion and insecurity here. Just blame one man for all the problems in the world and you will be ok. Otherwise maybe stick to the football boards. It is a little bit better over there.

Incorrect. Logic has no home on the football board and hasn't for YEARS.

He will go top 14. Mark it.

And who if anybody has ever argued that he was not a potential lottery pick?

Several members of our fan base told me in Hot Springs that there was no way Tony would be a lottery pick. One went so far as to say he wouldn't be drafted.

Oh, and there was massive conjecture on their part that players from the 70's (who I'm certain must have gone on to fruitful NBA careers) would work Tony over if they were around.

And I recall a number of people who claimed to have talked to NBA scouts during games who said They were told he wouldn't even be drafted. That was laughable

I still don't think he goes in lottery , but I can't see him falling past mid 20s.. I think anywhere from 15-24 is where he will land
