Tony Mitchell's comments on "not playing hard"

Tony Mitchell commented at the NBA Scouting Combine this week about how he coasted at times last season.

It has been open season on Mitchell since with people commenting on what that says about Mitchell as a person.

I thought it said a lot too about how Mitchell has taken the high road throughout the last year.

Mitchell could have said any number of things to explain away last year. Considering his stature as a former Dallas area star and likely first-round NBA draft pick and how last season went, what he had to say carried a lot of weight. And he put the blame on himself instead of anyone else. He talked about how he needed to be more consistent. He talked about the injuries UNT suffered last year.

I cant remember a single time Mitchell has uttered a word that would hurt UNTs program after one of the most disappointing seasons in school history.

While I agree with Vito on the gist of this blog, I am getting a little tired of Vito's depiction of NT as a program that is fortunate to achieve anything in Division 1 athletics. Sure luck was involved in recruiting MItchell, but also probably a lot of hard work by Jones and staff. Vito has been here a long time and is as close to the program as an outsider can be and I certainly see why he think the way he does. NT has not shown him much and frankly he has little reason to believe that NT is capable of much more than he has seen.

There is no reason in the world other than incompetence that NT can't be as good as any non-power conference program in the nation. A lot of the pieces are now in place to move forward, and it is time to do so. The status quo is not good enough.

I would be ecstatic if we were status quo.

Agreed. Our Athletic Administration accepts mediocrity or less in the three major sports (football, Men's basketball an women's basketball). The only sports that NT has had any long-term success in are the very minor fan interest sports. I'm proud of all the athlete that have attended NT. Just wish I could say the same about the coaches and administration.

Scouts see video of Mitchell and maybe two or three of his ganes in person this year. They have no idea about any locker room or coaching issues.

Good article by Vito. If only done on here could have looked to Mitchell as an example during the season and not thrown the players under the bus to protect another terrible coaching hire.
