DESOTOBoth Bishop Dunne athletes thanked their track coaches, Isaac Bell and Dewey Wakefield, along with their teachers, parents, classmates and administrators in heart-felt speeches replete with tears.

Heard will be running Track for the University of North Texas, the second star from the Bishop Dunne Track team to attend UNT on a scholarship in the past three years. Austin Yeager of the class of 2011 is also a runner for UNT. Heard could break the high school TAPPS state record this weekend in three races: the 4x400 with three of his teammates, the 100 meter race and his best race, the 200 meter, where he is poised to break both a school and state TAPPS record. The current TAPPS State record is 21.8. Heard has already beaten that time in earlier meets this season.

Looks like a real good signing for NT track, he is credited with the second best time in the 200m in the state at 21.28.

I do wonder, especially now that track is improving, why NT seldom announces their track signings.

I follow track in the fort bend area and there is some track talent coming from this area for 2013. Jamison justice, fort bend travis, who ran a 48.8 open 400m is coming to unt.

The football team also has several 2013 athletes who ran track. Sed Ellis, Chad Davis, darvin kidsey and John schlechi, all competed at the state track meet this year.

Sed Ellis anchored the 3a champion 4x2 that broke the record and he also runs the open 200.

John schlechi ran the 4x2 at state in 4a. He ran s 10.5 100m no wind this season and won district as a soph in the 100m with a 10.68

Darvin kidsey has high jumped a 6'9 this season and competed at state.

Chad Davis won district as a soph in the 400 with a 48.2. Went to state in the 4x1,, 4x2, & 4x4. Top splits are 9.6, 20.5, & 47.9

I know Davis will continue to purse track. Not sure about the others. Some football players want to add weight and do not run track in college.

Hopefully the track coaches reach out to these athletes because they can improve the track yeam and a cusa championship can be in reach. They may not be able to put in enough time to run open events, but the should be able to run strong legs on the relays and give tbe unt track team some good depth.

Those are all good times in HS and I am happy that these young men elected to join the Mean Green. However, those times are not even close to being competitive at the college level.

Ok, where to start...

The original post was to talk about 2013 high school recruits that are coming in. Not guys that were ready to compete on the college level while they are currently in high school. They wil have 4 to 5 years to improve for college.

If you are one of the best in the state of Texas in high school track, then you are probably one of the tops in the nation. Most of these athletes I mentioned went to the state track meet. Out of thousands of track athletes in the country, they are ranked in the top 10%. That's better than good.

OK, the final point of not being close to competitive on the college level...I will take their best times IN HIGH SCHOOL, and see how they stack up against college competition. I will compare their times to the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships. My post stated that they may not be able to run open events, but can become strong leg on the relays.

John Shelleci ran a 10.56 this year. No wind. 10.50 Won the Gold in the Sun Belt TFC. 10.56 would have won Bronze and gave UNT 6 extra points.

UNT did not even field a 4x100 but the winning time was 40.54. Bronze was 40.75. 4th place was 41.20. Chad Davis's state 4x100 team that placed 3rd at state ran faster with a 41.01. With the winning time being 40.54 athletes that are spliting 10.00 or lower are very competitive. Chad Davis and John Shelleci can split below a 10.00...

Darvin Kidsey jumped a 6'9 which ranks amoung the nation's best. 2nd place at the Sun Belt TFC was 6'9. He scores points and possibly medals.

in the 4x400, 3:15.76 placed 5th at the Sun Belt TFC. Davis and Fort Bend Bush's best time this year was 3:15.64. They would have beaten 4 college teams at the SBTFC. North Texas 4x400 placed 8th with a time of 3:20.66. They can use all the 48s and 47s they can get.

I'm not even sure if all these guys plan on running track, but if these guys are added to the track team and they can build on what they have done in high school, UNT has made a significant improvement in the depth of the team and can surely put together some competitive relays that can lead to a conference championship and possibly something bigger in the future.

Surely you didn't compare a kid's best time with the times of others at another meet? (on another day, another track, different conditions and time). As I stated, I welcome these kids but these times does nothing for me in terms of improving UNT track & Field. I also have followed track for over 40 years. (Mainly schools in Oak Cliff and their surburban neighbors to the south) I've been to the state meet a number of years along with the Texas Relays. Again, these times and jumps aren't bad but not enough to get me excited. UNT need to find more Alvin Crenshaw's (Dallas Roosevelt) that were/are world class sprinters. The good thing is that it only takes about 1-2 of these guys to make a huge impact in individual races and relays.

I really appreciate your input and feedback on these kids. Expecially the kids from down south.

NT isn't likely to get the elite in track any more than any other sport. At least not from Texas, if you do follow NT track I think you have seen some big improvements in performance since the coaching change. Actually track is easier to evaluate recruits than any other sport, even with the differences in marks due to conditions and timing methods; there is a lot of comparability and a big funnel leading to the state meets. Also being a partial scholarship sport, there is a little better chance to land a higher evaluated recruit by offering more than the big guys.

NT track is getting better so they are bringing in recruits that are upgrading the program. I think and hope this will continue.

Only problem... The rumour from good sources tells me that the Men's Track budget along with scholarships have been cut. This is to make way for the Baseball team. It is going to be hard for Carl Sheffield to win conferences if this is what Rick V is doing.

I hope that is not the case. Carl Sheffield is a great coach, as noted by his team's results, and an even better person. I had the opportunity to work with Carl years ago, and you can't find many people better than him. I hope he has a long career at North Texas and builds a power.

If you cut ships for track, might as well get rid of the program. Frankly, it makes no sense being that men's track counts as 3 sports; indoor, outdoor and cross country.

I actually don't believe it, there is no need because of title nine to cut more men's ships even if baseball is added. If NT can't financially fund baseball without cuts in other ships; there is no reason to start it because it will definitely be poorly funded.

mg_track, i've heard the same thing from a reliable source

baseball's addition will most likely spell the end of a funded men's track program. I've been on the record, on this board, to be against cutting of track, etc to fund baseball. I just don't see how it is economically feasible to be adding a sport when you have to potentially cut other sports. This appears to be evidence that we are not in a position to support baseball (and/or track) at the level they should be supported. It would be a real shame to see track go away. I think men's track is only behind men's golf (and possibly football) in the # of conference titles claimed by the Mean Green.

While this is slightly off topic, I continue to support building an indoor football facility before starting a baseball program. If we're serious about being serious then we had better start acting like a big time college football program. Indoor facilities are a necessity in today's recruiting game
