MURFREESBORO — Want to put a scowl on an MTSU sports fan’s face?

Try saying these words: Adding Western Kentucky to Conference USA was the right thing to do.

Oh, the horror of such a thought.

What about the Blue Raiders rising above their rival in conference affiliation? What about MTSU getting separation from its neighbor? What about Big Blue winning and Big Red sulking?

Well, those are good reasons for a subjective onlooker (see fan), but not for someone objectively eyeing the big picture.

MTSU got a C-USA invitation first, and it will join the league in July. WKU, per its official announcement Monday, will be a C-USA member one year later.

So much for leaving the Hilltoppers in the dust.

MTSU administrators will shrug their shoulders and say all the right things publicly. A rivalry makes both schools better, and the like.

Coaches will highlight the high interest of their games with WKU, though some will privately grumble about those annoying Hilltoppers still hanging around.

Such reactions are natural. Heck, they’re expected. WKU would feel the same if the roles were reversed.

But a more interesting perspective comes from MTSU fans. An unscientific survey of Blue Raider followers — via phone calls, social media and message boards — reveals a wide range of reactions, though most are steeped in frustration.

Here’s a sampling of viewpoints from MTSU fans about WKU’s addition to C-USA and commentary on each:http://www.dnj.com/article/20130402/BLUERAIDERS01/304020027/Hilltoppers-right-pick-C-USA

Good point I found in this article:

That being said, the pairing of MTSU and WKU will greatly increase C-USA’s chances of holding events in Nashville like a future basketball tournament.

I did not realize that WKY and MTSUs have owned the Bubas Cup over the last 12 years, while the sleeping giant still sleeps ;)

This years basketball collapse really came at a bad time :(
