Recapping the old/new Big East in terms of North Texas

I don't disagree with the points in this post, but why does 1998 matter.

I've never understood the "historic" arguments. I don't care what happen in 1929 and I don't think it had any bearing on today's game.

I think its fair to measure football in terms of eras and benchmarks.

In our case 1995 -1999 our return to D1 & the Big West, and 2000-2012 the Sun Belt years.

We are 59-119 since 1998.

That's 14 years of 33% football.

I was replying to a point that alumni aren't involved. Factor this in with the fact that since 1998 (about the time RV got here) there has been an effort to change the culture on campus....lead by the AD. This is all well and good except all those students that have seen the transformation on campus have seen bad football for 15 years. Those students then turned into alumni. The point I was making is recent culture change on campus hasn't translated to alumni support.....because we've sucked for 15 years.

I highlighted 1998 because that's when RV's tenure started adn there's a pretty large sample size of recent alums that saw an increase in spirit on campus but bad football.

I thought that might explain the lack of recent alumni support.....

The older alums who have seen success cling to the hope that this ship can be righted. Coach Mac has promised that it will happen, but we do not have the luxury to wait for four years into his tenure for this to happen. We must win NOW! You can sense the pain and envy of our alums in the metroplex at any gathering. We must get better soon. I do disagree that culture change will ever come to Denton. College town and Denton don't even belong in the same sentence.

We all know many who aren't involved. I've got friends who were in frats and one who is a former player - I don't think any of them have ever set foot back on campus since they've graduated.

We talk about selling ourselves to the Metroplex...we're not selling to our own flock very well.

It's a shame, too. The new stadium really is like being on a different planet compared to Fouts. It's just getting past the defeatist mindset.

SOAP BOX MOMENT: Look...from time to time, one poster here will call another poster here - and, it could be anyone - negative. From my point of view, whether a post is considered positive or negative is irrelevent. What is relevent is that at least there's someone out there from UNT who cares enough to even bother paying attention.

I'd love to have thousands of negative UNT alums coming on here and venting. They'd at least be putting their foot in the door. And, when the foot's in the door, a salesman has a chance.

Agree 100%. Apathy is our biggest issue right now.

Once upon a time, I could drive across the river into Little Rock for and seeing an Arkansas State bumper sticker or plate was a unique thing. I would go to ASU events in Little Rock and could look around the room and guess a person's graduation date within a few years because they were alums from one of the golden eras. Our Red Wolf Mafia lunch group would talk about the lost classes or lost generations that hadn't seen good football and were just gone.

Now if I don't see at least three vehicles a day with Red Wolf something on them it noticeable. We've been semi-sorta thinking of buying a new house in the Little Rock area and cruising new neighborhoods it isn't unusual to see drive by a house with a stAte flag or Red Wolf flag.

Those lost classes, the lost generations, many weren't lost. They just didn't feel like they had anything to support now they are going to games, have a nice new Red Wolf plate on the car, every so often someone will see my ASU jacket or bumper sticker and throw up the wolf hand gesture as they go by.

You can sell and sell and sell and market and market and market, but until they are proud of the product, they aren't buying in.
