He was on the travel team last year. Played a lot on special teams.

I hope they can put some meat on Jamal Marshall's bones. At 6'3", he is a good height for a LB and has the frame to put on some weight. But at 193, I don't see him being used in anything but obvious passing situations.

Yep...be shocked if Berglund isn't the starter.

Keep in mind, unless it is a new player; all the weights are those at the beginning of last season. I don't know why they don't update them more often, they are bound to have them with all the emphasis on off season conditioning.

Few coaching staffs are going to list a newcomer above a returning starter until they have won the spot on the field ether in the Spring, Pre-season or in season.

I think McCarney is right in that the great thing is that at least NT has the bodies now, plus a hundred in spring ball and 85 ships given.

It is time for McCarney and the team to take a 2001 leap forward this year.

Very surprised with Polk 3rd in the middle instead of 1st or 2nd on the outside. No way we need a 190lb OLB, unless (as mentioned) in a pure passing down.

We had better hope Terrell is the real deal. Don't want to start with 5-8 and 5-9 receivers. Need some size there. Still a lot of walk-ons out there.

Despite all the DBs brought in, we are still counting on walk-ons as backups? And damn we have a short defensive backfield. Makes the Marshall move to LB even that more confusing to me.

These player weights aren't even from last year. Boutwell was listed at 269 last year and Lincoln at 266. Still need to add some weight, but it is better than what is looks. If they can both get in the 275-285 range that is fine for a 3 technique in FBS.

He was at the signing day event amongst all the other last fall transfers and mid-season transfers. I stopped and talked with him for a few minutes. I'm pretty sure he didn't fly all the way in from Salt Lake City (his home town) just to attend the event.

No, he's here, Trussell is ahead of him at right tackle. Trussell is about 20 lbs heavier, an inch taller, and stronger in the weight room than Manu. Don't underestimate him, he's coming in this spring looking to earn a starting spot too.

Berglund looked faster and had the strongest arm of all of the QB's. He also had the quickest release. As of yesterday Thompson and McNulty were neck and neck for second and Gill (walk-on from whitesboro) wasn't too far behind them. All of them did well with short-mid-distant throws (Berguland's were more often the "prettiest"). At the end they were running scrimmages (non-tackle, but definitely NOT non-contact) and all of the QB's were doing pretty well. Berglund didn't seem rattled by getting roughed up when he ran the ball. But then, he got roughed up in practice last fall. Thompson and McNulty were pretty even in their thowing, but McNulty might have been a half a step faster.

All of the RB's looked good. Pegram looked like a combo of Byrd and Jimmerson. Fast and strong.......with pretty good moves in the open. Rex Rollins (#20) was getting a lot of time in the scrimmages. He did well and looked pretty fast. Mark Lewis (4) looked good as well. As of day 1 we are very deep at the RB position.

All of these guys did well with Carlos Harris being the fastest of the group. ITerrell did well, but didn't do anything to make anyone say "wow". Some of the "wow" catches (IMHO) were by Caldwell. There were at least two catches that looked like Casey Fitzgerald. This kid is quick, fast, and hungry. and he is not afraid of going for it in a crowd.

Smith had one of the few long ball catches in QB/WR drills. Pleasant did ok in the mid-range catches.

Chancellor is exactly the same as he has always been. His injury did not slow him down at all. Teegarden had a great day. This guy is looking to get some serious playing time. Make some tough catches and seems a bit faster than last year. Of course, he might have looked that way because he was closer to me than game time.

Other WR's, Willie Hubbard (#34) had some good catches and runs. As I said in another thread, Brady Brown looked quicker than I thought a 6'5" receiver should be. Not great hands, but above average. Andy Mensah (#23) had a few good catches. At 6'2" he adds overall height to the wr corps. John Chelf (#31) was another WR who was doing a Casey Fitzgerald imitation. He was quick, above average in speed and he was not shy about going after the ball in traffic. He might have been just a little faster and quicker than Teegarden.

The overall look of the O-line is (physically) very impressive. Justin Manu (#70 juco transfer) was the most verbal of all of them. Michael Banogu (#66) was an impressive looking player. He looked a lot like Antonio Johnson. For someone who is new on the squad, he seemed to be getting extra attention (non-yelling attention) from the coaching staff. Most of the time, the new guy (especially walk-ons) pretty much get ignored......or yelled at.

Defense

ALL of the db's were very aggressive. In the beginning of practice they were having a skeleton punt return drill. Evans (#1) was always about 5 yards ahead of his coverage group. This guy will end up having some very memorable plays before the season is over. #13 was very aggressive in his coverage and all over the place. And a juco from cisco jc #41 Rickey Pratt was all over his guy on a couple of plays......very impressive for a 5'7" (and he looked it) db.

As mentioned, they were running skeleton punt return drills at the beginning of practice. The returners were Chancellor, Harris (#9), Jones (#13) and Wilhite (who is now wearing #21). Believe it or not Chancellor and Harris were almost neck and neck in their returns, but Chancellor was a shade better because he has a little bit better peripheral vision. Jones was about a 1/2 step behind them. Wilhite was about a full step behind the other three. Chancellor and Harris were the most elusive.

I'm told that before spring is over MANY other players will get a shot at doing returns.
