I'll stick with my 4 win prediction, but this wouldn't surprise me one bit. I'll stick with my DT starting over Berglund prediction as well... really don't think Mac will sit the senior down.

Berglund. That is the key.

Berglund won't make the D-line put more pressure on the opposing QB. He won't make the LB's tackle better or the DB's cover and tackle better. Nor will he make them cause (and recover) fumbles or get int's.

Now, what he can do, and Thompson too with improved play, is keep the D off the field and wear down the other D. But that last part is mostly the job of the O-line.

The x-factor here is BB, IMO. If he's the game changer all of our green kool aid is making us believe, NT could hit .500. If the same squad from last year steps on the field, 3-4 wins max. Sad, but a tougher conference could make this real ugly real quick....

I am not writing off game against Ohio. Sure, they went 9-4, but four wins game against teams with a combined 5-43 record and three other wins came against teams with losing records. Yes, they won at State College in the season opener against a still shocked Penn State team. And yes, they beat an inconsistent ULM team in a bowl game. Point is that 9-4 record is not as impressive as it looks.

Ya, 9-4 is easy.

When was the last time we were 9-4?

Beating Penn St. in Pedophile Valley is easy.

When was the last time we beat a team of that stature on their field (have we ever)?

Ohio beating ULM means nothing.

Whooping the crap out of a ULM team that whooped the crap out of us is easy, right?. ULM 42 UNT 16. Ohio 45 ULM 17?

Fans do this every off-season. Be prepared for heart break.

I don;t disagree, Harry, but don't assume this kid will come in here and be the next Johnny Football.

We don't know anything about his on-field decision making. I hope for the best, but it is a huge question mark.

Perhaps you forgot about that whole WKU game. The one where we were up 2 scores midway through the 4th quarter, DT throws a pick for a TD, and Mac refuses to allow DT to throw another forward pass for the remainder of the game and season. Of course, we lose because the head football coach had zero confidence in his QB and refused to allow that QB the chance for redemption.

And that is the QB you think Mac will start?

Exactly. That game just shows how mule stubborn Mac is.

We don't need him to be Johnny Football, we just need him to be a significant improvement over Thompson, which should not be that difficult to do.

Berglund has the pieces around him too. Thompson had all day to throw last year behind that line, which I think was the most inexcusable part of his performance last year.

People tried to justify DT's play by saying he had no weapons, but he had all day to throw and still missed the receivers by ridiculous margins at times.

But yes, you are right that the coaches, mainly Mac, have little to no confidence in DT so it would be shocking if Berglund was not named the starter.

Mac has no trust in Thompson and talks up Berglund every chance he gets. Easy pick to start.

6 & 5 and a bowl game and that based on elgible transfers and JUCO's with some already developed talent.

We just need to start a string of winning seasons...no roller coaster ride football seasons.

GMG!

Season is 12 games long, not including a bowl game if we were to make one.

Side Note: Why again does everything think we have such a stud in Berglund?

I think the fact that he was rated between Johnny Football and a QB who played for the national championship this year has a lot of people hopeful.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/rankings/rank-2648

Brett Vito has called him the highest rated QB recruit to ever come to UNT. The fact that he is supposedly extremely mobile. The fact that the head football coach can't praise him enough (careful here, remember, another head coach said a certain point guard could start for any team in the Big East).

Fans desperately need something, anything to be excited about.

Time will tell.

Between the "Likely" and "realistic best" cases, I find it interesting that there is a 5 game difference.

I think that reflects a certain amount of uncertainty by the author. In the least, a whole lotta wiggle room....probably hinging on Brock.

But I didn't think "stars" and "ratings" meant anything around here?

1) CFN basically says that if we don't win the games that are competitive, we only have 2 wins. Well, that sounds pretty idiotic. Did they project us as a "win" for those teams when evaluating them? Aren't MOST of the games supposed to be competitive?

2) Back to BB/DT again, huh? Am I the only one who appreciates Derek's bluntly announced desire to improve, even though he probably expects that he will NOT be the starter? I think we may be in a sweet position if that is the case. Let's assume that Brock is at least a little quicker and more accurate than DT. Let's also hope that DT does improve a bit. Now, we get a few wins and we're up by a little bit towards the end of the 3rd quarter in any given mid-season game. Brock feels a little pull, maybe hamstring, nothing major but should probably rest a few days to be safe. Then of course everyone says, "oh, but we're SO CLOSE! Can't he be like RG3 and play hurt?" If all of the rest goes as we hope and we end up in a situation like this, wouldn't it be nice to have consistent-but-not-awesome DT close out the game safely and get BB a bit of rest to be cautious?

Isn't this the scenario you EXPECT to have between a 1st and 2nd string QB in the FBS? Let's consider the strategic gestalt of personnel management rather than the simple-yet-classic "who is better?" scenario a bit more often. Everyone, no matter how talented or improved, has a role to play. Perhaps that same situation will be reversed if DT improves a whole lot by the fall. Maybe whoever is named the starter will have the flu one week. Who knows? My point is that we should be hoping for the best out of BOTH of them in order to have a well-organized and prepared team.

Cue the comments that CFN doesn't do their homework about us, doesn't know about Berglund, or is biased against the mid majors.

To be fair in the bashing of CFN I am a moderator for their boards and I think their full of it 3/4 of the time.

Does it really what year he is or how many games he has played for his school if he's played poorly in the majority of those outings?

Oregon did ok going with the less experienced QB, as did Notre Dame, as did A&M, and numerous others. Just win baby

I could be proven wrong when he starts, but I think it has more to do with Mac wanting DT in there with his experience. We will see.

Understandable, but have you not heard Mac gushing about Berglund every chance possible?

I still think DT has potential. He showed it in some of those early season games, but when the latter part of last fall rolled in, its like his skills quit on him. Personally, I don't care who our QB is as long as they do their share and help produce a win. If DT suddenly becomes super accurate with his passes, then so be it. If Berglund's mobility means he can create windows to pass through, and that brings us wins, sure that's alright too.

It's a bad place to be - a QB that underperformed or a touted player that has yet to prove himself.
