UNT has hired former Arizona and Oklahoma assistant coach Ryan Walters, head coach Dan McCarney said this afternoon.

Walters spent last season as a graduate assistant at OU. He was previously on the staff at Arizona.

“I coached against him when he was at Colorado,” McCarney said. “He worked for Greg Brown, Mike Stoops and Bobby Stoops. Those were his
mentors. When the staff at Arizona got let go, he went to Oklahoma.”

sounds like a push or improvement at the coaching position, but possibly a step down at recruiting.

Didn't sound like Gaines did much in recruiting this last go round. His territory was Louisiana and I believe we got shut out there. Walters already has Texas ties in place

It was noted he recruited several areas in Texas and Colorado. I believe his Texas areas were Austin, Fort Worth and San Antonio.

The one recruit we have pulled out of that area is from Marble Falls (Austin) and one of our best. Cyril Lemmon.

Some great talent in SA &Austin.

Hope we can tap into it

Are graduate assistants paid? I honestly don't know. It sounds like a glorified internship that one would take right out of school before getting a real assistants position.

Not much. They typically get a full scholarship (like a player) plus a stipend. But coaches have been known to leave full-time paid positions to take a cherry GA position.

Here's an article about someone who went from OC at Virginia to a GA at Alabama: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/andy_staples/06/09/personnel-issues/index.html#
