Very interesting; great work by Mr. Tepper.

That certainly validated the run on first; throw on second; throw on third and 3 yards to go or more theory. I would bet the breakdown stays about the same with the run vs. pass this year; but factoring in Berglund runs and completions on routine throws and that will hopefully make a huge difference in offensive output.

-The most conservative playcalling in the state of Texas on first down?

North Texas. The Mean Green’s offense had relative balance in 2012,

running the ball 56% of the time overall. But on first down, Dan

McCarney’s bunch was absolutely not taking any chances, running the ball

at an 11.25% higher rate on first down than their overall playcalling.

In fact, if you were to take away first down, North Texas actually passed more than they ran.

In short: North Texas ran the ball on first down, and tended to go to

the air on second and third (and, sometimes, fourth) down to make up for

it.

My question is why doesn't it work well on first down? Or is it due to Mac's obsession with turnovers? I'm thinking the latter.

I remember watching us not throw one pass on 1st down the entire 1st half of the season opener against FIU in 2011 and being frustrated as hell (yes, they blew us out. Still wouldn't throw on 1st down, even after being down 3 scores).

Hopefully, this changes next year. It needs to in order to have any chance at a bowl.

You have to have a QB you are comfortable with throwing the ball. I know Thompson is a good guy, but he is erratic at best with his accuracy. If you throw on 1st down with an "iffy" chance of completing it, you now have 2 chances to get 10 yds, as opposed to 2 chances as geth 6-7 yds by running on 1st down.

In other words...better QB play...more balance on the offense.
