Christian Hines?

Vito was talking about how we have an extra scholarship in this class after all.

He thought that maybe he shouldn't have counted Berglund for this 2013, but I'm almost certain that Berglund has to be in the 2013 class since the 2012 class has no room to back count any scholarships.

My question regards Christian Hines, the receiver from Corsicana who was supposed to grayshirt last semester along with Andrew Tucker and be part of the 2013 class. I have seen Tucker on campus, so his grayshirt must have gone as planned but I'm not so sure about Hines.

Does anyone know if Christian Hines is still with the team? If he isn't then this is where the extra scholarship for this class came from.

He worked out today...his workout reports are horrible though according to NT Football Performance. Guy was great in high school so I hope he buys in and earns his spot.

I do too. I was excited about Hines, but wonder if he will turn into another Sampson. If so, that will be a big disappointment to me.

I also thought that Berglund should not have been counted in 25 per annum recruits allowed because he was never a recruit. He was essentially a transfer from Kansas. As such, he would be counted in the 85 maximum allowable just as Terrell and Pegram were because he was not available to anyone else.

As to Hines, I believe that he was a better player in high school than Sampson and I hope that it translates to being a good college player. Hines had all of the tools...size, speed and hands. What worries me is that he hasn't kept up the off-season work and that will make it doubly tough to try to catch up now.

I believe that Hines had two older brothers who were successful college players and I hope that his not wanting to be the only failure gives him the incentive to succeed.

Doesn't the 25 limit apply to transfers as well? I thought the rule limits 25 new scholarships being awared per year, regardless of whether a HS recruit, JUCO, transfer, walkon, etc... If someone starts receiving financial aid, they burn one of the 25 spots for that year and that at any point in time you cannot have more than 85 players receiving aid (I believe there are some career ending medical exceptions to the 85 rule). This would include adding someone in January that receives aid and then does not return for the fall. Their spot is gone for the year (my understanding).

Anyone have insight to the specifics?

Yes, if they transfer in on scholarship than they count towards the class. Pegram and Terrell will count in this class just like trice and Feldt did last year.

What is making you you think he didn't transfer, pay his own way in the fall, and started receiving a scholarship in January (and therefore count against the 25 in 2013)?

No, that's my point either way. He should count for the 2013 class whether he was on scholarship in fall or not.

If you don't sign the full 25 in any class you can back count your early signees from the next year into that previous class, opening up scholarships for your current class. I was just adding that this could not have been the case with Berglund since our 2012 class was full.

Are you certain of this concept of 'back counting'? If they were not receiving a scholarship at any point in the prior year, I would not think they could be 'back counted'. That seems to violate the spirit of the rule. To me, you have up to 25 scholarships to award during the calendar year. Use them or lose them. No spliting of scholarship. If you award to someone in January, it is gone for the year, regardless of whether or not the player stays for the whole year (so if player leaves in the summer, you can't award that same scholarship to someone else in the fall).

If you have info, please share. I will also try to research to see if I can find anything.
