From 2005-2010, the North Texas football program compiled a 13-58 record (9-37 Sun Belt) and was known as one of the worst teams in the FBS.

The Mean Green still have a lot of work to do, but things in Denton have started to look up since Dan McCarneys arrival two years ago.

We took over a team that was bottom 10 in the country, said McCarney, who has led North Texas to 5-7 and 4-8 records thus far. We have a plan to win and we know what it takes.

2012 showed there are plenty of reasons to believe that this team is improving.

It didnt translate over to the record books, but the Mean Green showed distinct competitiveness against quality opponents.

Kansas State held an eight-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter in UNTs 35-21 loss to the Wildcats, while Troy and Western Kentucky won by a combined eight points.

North Texas even took Louisiana-Lafayette the conference runner-up by surprise in a 30-28 Week 8 victory. But the trick for next season is to win more games like these and to stay consistent.

We have to continue to grow the program, said McCarney. This is one of the youngest teams Ive ever been around. We have to focus on our weaknesses and shortcomings and get better in the months ahead.

Uh, we weren't one if the 10 worst teams in college football the season before you took over, coach.

We were a 3 win team. Nothing to write home about, but not one of the 10 worst in the nation.

That's debatable, my friend

We absolutely were. College Football News used to do a a 3-year football ranking of programs and we were in the bottom 10 Dodge. The Dodge era was the worst in school history and there's no debating it.

When you go 5-7 and 4-8 in your first two seasons, you have to say something that makes those records look good.

Dude. Maybe we haven't exactly been lighting up the joint under Mac, but the last two seasons have been NOTHING like the Dodge debacle.

I know it's not remotely official, but we weren't in the final bottom 10 that year.

We weren't even on the waiting list.

Now, he may have been thinking of before Coach Chico took over, because we probably were on the bottom 10 before that.

The frustrating thing is that 3 of the teams on the list that year all went bowling this year. San Jose State(11 wins), Western Kentucky(7 wins), Bowling Green(8 wins).

Damn.

What did you expect Mac to say? He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't!

Yes, at this point, we are all so mad that whatever any coach or administration member says, we won't want to hear it.

Just win. We don't need to be reminded of our current standing in the NCAA pecking order or told how much awesomer it will be when x and y happen....

Ouch. When you see the numbers in writing its pretty ugly. We suck at football.

Please never mention last years Troy game. I have never seen such a calamity. A division 1 kicker who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn that night. Awful.

Just off the top of my head, teams that WERE on that list that went bowling after the 2012 season:

#10 Bowling Green - An 8-5 record and a Military Bowl loss to San Jose St.

#9 Vanderbilt - A 9-4 record and a Music City Bowl win over N.C. State.

#8 WKU - A 7-6 record and a Little Ceasars Bowl loss to Western Michigan.

#2 San Jose St. - An 11-2 record with a Military Bowl Win over Bowling Green. Ya, thats right the second worst team in college football turned it around.

On the waiting list:

Duke - A 6-7 record with a Belk Bowl (??) loss to Cincinnati.

LaLa - A 9-4 record and a New Orleans Bowl win over East Carolina.

Central Michigan - A 7-6 record and a Little Ceasar Bowl victory over WKU.

Ball St. - A 9-4 record with a Beef O'Brady's Bowl loss to UCF Knights. And may I point out that Ball St. was up, down, and back up again while we have continued to SUCK.

All of these teams were considered to be in a worse state than UNT at the end of 2010 have turned it around.

By several of the posts on here, it's pretty clear that we not only continue to accept losing, but actively make excuses for it.

we need: a better budget a new stadium a higher salary budget for coaches a higher level of recruit a better conference ....?
A new Athletic Director I predict we will have another losing season next year and of course everybody from the administration at top to what fans we have left at the bottom will accept it. And some fans will continue to come here and blame other fans for this mess. This is North Texas after all...

Not true. The new en vogue thing to do is to blame players.
