Even with the added potential for TV revenue in the Mountain West, Sterk is said to have tried diligently to make the Big East move work. He attended the Big East meetings in Dallas last week with SDSU president Elliot Hirshman, with the goal of determining the future earning prospects of a conference rapidly disintegrating.

When the Big East couldn’t guarantee revenue or produce solid projections, the Mountain West became the safer option. The Big East, which has a year remaining in its current TV deal, almost certainly would have meant more money for the 2013 football season. But anything beyond that is an increasingly murky proposition, especially if Connecticut and Cincinnati make good on reports that they, too, want out.
