Big East-San Diego State working on exit statement

Big East and San Diego State officials are working on a joint release announcing a mutual agreement to dissolve San Diego State’s agreement to come to the Big East on July 1, 2013 according to sources familiar with the discussions.

At the same time, San Diego State and Mountain West officials are finalizing an agreement which will keep San Diego State and Boise State in the MWC as full time members.

The announcements, barring any last second snags, should be made in the next few days.

The joint statement by the Big East and San Diego State is more cosmetic than anything else, designed to make clear that there was no animosity by either party, just an consensus that the best course for both parties was to go their separate ways.

With the departure of San Diego State, following the decision by Boise State not to join (also this July), the Big East’s “western” strategy has been abandoned.

Interesting, this would seem to indicate that they want to stabilize the schools they have prior to adding new ones...

Makes sense if you think about it....another year or two with the group that they have would certainly help them solidify. I think there's a lot of merit to this strategy.

It gives them something solid to take to the networks. While they certain had a product with a value, if the membership is continuously shifting no one can determine that value. With most schools, it's not just school X is worth y media dollars. It's the games people watch, school X playing school Y will generate an audience worth Z to advertisers. Until the game of musical chairs stops for the Big East, no one is going to give them a very good starting point for negotiations as the bidders can't tell on what they are bidding! The Big East is the only conference in near total flux with a contract due to be negotiated. Other conferences either have existing contracts or a groups of continuing members on which the networks can bid.

True and it will also mean the schools that they have will get a nice payday with all of the exit fees etc...that money will help them stabilize things.
