Big East deal could be worth as little as $60 million per year

Big East primary TV rights deal might be worth only $60 million-$80 million per year, multiple sources have told CBSSpports.com.

It is believed that the league went into negotiations estimating its rights' worth as significantly higher than $100 million per year.

It is no secret that the league's existence might hinge on that value of that TV deal. It is known that Houston has a provision in its pending deal with the Big East that it can get out of its agreement without penalty if certain revenue projections aren't achieved.

Each incoming Big East member has negotiated its own deal regarding conference withdrawl, sources told CBSSports.com

For example, Boise State can reduce its buyout to leave the Big East if there is a drop of 25 percent in current aggregate total revenue. Also, Boise State can have that fee reduced if less than 70 percent of the new TV contract goes to football. Houston, San Diego State, Boise State and SMU, among others, enter the Big East on July 1. Commissioner Mike Aresco said TV negotiations are ongoing and put no date on their completion.

The league recently moved quickly to add Tulane and East Carolina after losing Rutgers and Louisville. That gives the league 15 football-playing schools when Navy joins in 2015. Using the figures described above, that would mean the average payout per school of $4 million-$5.3 million per year.

Don't they also have to share at least a part of that with the seven non-football institutions? If basketball gets 30% that would reduce the amount to roughly $3.2 - 4.1 million each. Note: Sorry, I included Boise and San Diego in the basketball payout; they would acturally get less and the other members slightly more.

People keep saying the Big East will take more from CUSA, but who would they take. The Big East needs big market teams that can deliver their market to add value to the tv deal. I'm not sure there are any teams left on the expansion list that meet both of those criteria.

If the Big East loses one or two higher profile schools the basketball schools will dissolve and reform. From what I understand, it is harder to start a new football conference so yes rejoining CUSA is plausible. You should hope and pray the Big 10 doesn't take UConn or ACC take Cincy etc... No one here wishes anything bad for Houston. There is no more auto bid so we are in the same boat. Bowing up against us is silly.

If they do want to create a new conference things have to go very quickly... i.e. before the new BCS contract gets ratified I think (no clue when that is). Otherwise any new confrence will be left with no shot at BCS games it seems to me.

New article about the Big East. Until July 1st the baseketball schools have enough votes to pull away but retain the conference name and tournament money - assuming Temple doesn't have a vote about membership issues which is questionable. If I was one of those basketball schools (Marquette, DePaul, St. John's, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall and Villanova) I would do just that instead of having such a far flung conference and having to split the money too many ways.
