Here's the quote:

“I try to leave guys in, but if guys are making mistakes, you have to pull them out,” Benford said.

This explains the crazy substitution patterns. I thought I was actually witnessing this but wasn't sure. I've noticed especially with Coleman that he comes in, makes a mistake and immediately sits back down. Same thing has happened with others but thought maybe I was just looking for an explanation. Well there it is.

It's crazy, but there is a method to the madness, but it's still madness.

But with just one mistake, is it really good for a player to come out and just sit on that mistake? Wouldn't sometimes letting them play a little beyond that one mistake allow them to get over it quicker and move on?

That is some kinda anxiety that doesn't allow a player to relax if you get pulled so quickly. That is when you begin to over think things out of sheer fear of being benched.

what do you think?

Seems obvious right?

So our guys basically play knowing that they will get pulled if they make one mistake?

Not buying it.

You can talk to players after a made basket on there way back down the court. This explanation makes very little sense. I've seen players pulled after a minute of play, and even scoring during that minute with no defensive lapse.

If you really are pulling players after every little mistake, what do you think that does to the players confidence? How does a player ever get into a rhythm?

The mystery continues.

This is ridiculous. Turn this around now! I'm not putting up with another losing season. I'm not a huge donor or anything like that but i refuse to support a university that lets this crap happen. cue Andrew in 3.......2.......1.......

I think this about sums it up perfectly.

The only "mistake" i wouldn't tolerate would be lack of hustle. You can always bust your ass on defense and for rebounds.

Dean Smith used that sub theory and so did Roy Williams for a good while. It's not "every little mistake", Dad (or mom). I don't agree with the philosophy for long-term, but if it's mental mistakes or lack of effort (however slight), I do. It's not gonna hurt someone who wants to win. And some players don't really know how to play hard, esp. frosh and juco. They may think they do-but most players will admit later they really did not know how. And if it becomes a long term problem, that def. is on a coach for not driving the point home by sitting them early and often.

This can't be accurate as I have seen Benford pull folks who were playing well. (or not in the game long enough to make a mistake) This is a coaching style seen often with inner city HIGH SCHOOL basketball coaches. This drives me nuts.

Based on Benford's logic, we should be undefeated because the guys left in the games are playing well. What if RV pulled coaches out the first time they made mistakes. The only game in town left to watch would be intramurals in the men's gym or field next to Fouts.

In the history of all of college coaches, no one has ever done this. Why should RV trust that this will work for a first time coach? I want to give this guy time (perhaps because he is contractually bound to us) but if he ain't winning, he should break Shanice's record for shortest involuntary time in Denton, TX.

That's gonna be one expensive breaking of a record for the athletic department--and us fans--to accept.

I think it's better if Benford just says, "Yes, we know we're struggling. We're working on getting it fixed", regarding pretty much every question that could be asked about why this team is struggling and just leave it at that. Someone needs to make him watch Costner's media primer from 'Bull Durham' on repeat until he stops biting on these questions and providing too much extra info that should stay in the locker room (aka: subtly assigning blame to the players).

I'll keep my opinions on what I just read to myself.
