RV hires loser coach after loser coach after loser coach in sport after sport after sport. He's a great salesman, but he just can't identify, hire, or retain talent. He has to go. The state of affairs of our athletic program is abysmal and, taken as a whole, has been so for most of his tenure (and honestly has gotten worse). I have no reason to believe anything will ever get better under him. He really does need to go.

Under Rick V - 4 Consecutive New Orleans Bowl Appearances, 2 NCAA tournament bids (Men's BB), 1 NCAAW tournament bid, new softball complex, new tennis complex, new football stadium, new athletic department (including new weight room and training room), renovations to super pit, and in the works to bring back baseball. How much have you done in the last ten years??? Bet you can't list your accomplishments quite like that. You people need to get a life. Nobody's coming to your job trying to get you to leave because your squeegy streak pattern is off a bit. OH and let's not forget about tailgating.

Under Rick V - 4 Consecutive New Orleans Bowl Appearances - Didn't make that hire

2 NCAA tournament bids (Men's BB) - probalby his best hire

1 NCAAW tournament bid - I don't know for sure, did he make this hire?

new softball complex, new tennis complex, new football stadium, new athletic department (including new weight room and training room), renovations to super pit, and in the works to bring back baseball. - very true, in large part due to athletics fee. Student approval vote failed miserably the first try. The difference the 2nd try? Derrick Murray, whom RV had nothing to do with.

I like our pizza man, but he has shot himself in the foot several times. We also would not be where we are if not for several others who stepped up in a big way.

Nice post Rick. Exactly when are we getting that baseball? Most of the others aren't really working out so well, so I'm looking forward to finding another sport to hitch my wagon to. TIA.

NCAA sports is not a field you can rest on your laurels. RV super supporters seem to recite his accomplishments as if nobody else was involved and dismiss his failures or even some blame them on others. RV couldn't control DD, but it was because the BOR tied his hands. Stephens was the Presidents' hire and McCarney was dictated by Rawlins.

A lot of great things have been accomplished under RV's watch and some very questionable decisions have also been made. If you give him credit for one and not the other, you are being very bias. Someone's job performance should be rated based on what they have done versus what one could logically assume a qualified person would do any the same circumstances.

The reality is that is very hard to judge, one factor to consider is I don't think there have been many if any universities that have tried to hire him away. We can all offer opinions about the job we think the AD has done. The facts are that he has continued to get long term contracts so he must be satisfying the ones that matter.

IMO, NT is at an athletic crossroads; a lot as been done but NT is far from over the hump. Loyalty does not play a big factor in athletic decisions, the past is relevant only to the extent it predicts the future. NCAA sports is a tough business, and first rate leadership is mandatory.

Winning, donations and attendance are all factors that NT must improve to move forward. IMO, NT progress has been good overall under RV but the question is can he lead NT forward from this point.

As an aside, in the real world; being off your game a little can get you terminated in a hurry and most don't have contracts to cushion the blow.

Can we do sabermetrics on each individual AD employee and figure out VORS (value over replacement staffer)? I'd like to know if a Jamie Adams compares to USM's Brent Jones or exactly how to put Mandy's 2005 season in a historical context.

We can. The real question is can we get it to be someone's dissertation?

Mandy's entire tenure = FAILx2

ok-I'll play devil's advocate.

Under RV--8 straight years of awful football, hiring an unproven assistant basketball coach to lead the best team you've probably had in 40 years, had to depend on student leader to get stadium passed since he was unable to get it done before on the campaign he led.

Look, he's been an awesome advocate for UNT--probably as big a cheerleader of the Mean Green as we have ever had on the payroll. Tailgating has been his baby and it has helped things immesely. But, again, sometimes things are just so bad when you take something over that you cannot help but be looked at as a savior. Yes, the BOR tied his hands when he wanted to fire Dickey, but he also gave him two extensions, the last one that caused us to buyout a contract that strapped us tot he point of having to hire a high school coach. He gets major points for keeping Johnny Jones here for as long as he could. But the Stephens hire, Dodge hire, and Benford hire all have the same thing in cmmon: RV hired unproven assistants to run the money sports here and they were awful. Maybe Benford turns it all around and becomes a great coach, but I am not going to hold my breath. And if he does, then Tech will probably hire him away when they get the chance. It just wasn't a good long-term hire, no matter how this all turns out. To reiterate, RV is an awesome guy and huge fan of UNT--but you need the AD to be a good judge of coaching talent here. He's done fine with tailgaiting and improving fundraising here, but that last part is what makes you a national name instead of being a regional name. Right now, we are in danger of going right back to being a regional also-ran again because of the lack of success these money programs have given here at UNT for so long.
