Classic UNT athletics ! Here in KY there are NO EXCUSES in basketball. Benford would already be on the hot seat at any college in this state. I am sick of the damn excuses. WKU is already competing at the near top levels in D1 with a 1st full year HC and Murray State can play with ANYBODY not to mention UL and of course the Cats are both THE best. UNT can't even compete at the top levels of D2. Why do you guys tolerate this crap? LOSING the 1st round of the NCAA tourny is considered failure here. UNT considers this some remarkable damn achievement. Just find a way to WIN WIN WIN !

Wait just a minute there mister!!

We're young.

It takes at least three years to turn stuff around.

The cupboard was bare.

Benford hasn't got his own players in place yet.

Benford knows more about basketball than you (though this is also true of EVERY coach that's ever been fired)

We haven't played together enough yet.

Take our pick of any of these excuses, ummm I mean reasons, and just shush!!

Turn stuff around?? We were in a good place when JJ left us.

Ugh, no it most certainly was not.

But he's had really, really good players already here.

Ridiculous substitution patterns suggest otherwise.

It also doesn’t help them that in the past few years they’ve lost their Head Coaches to A&M, Nebraska, and Auburn. Every time they start having success they lose their Coach.

Could be but I'm willing to give him at least a half a season to see how he progresses as a coach. I just hope he can progress and get up to speed a lot quicker as he inherited a team with some serious talent that was ready to "take off". The first 6 games though it is very alarming the type of play we're seeing.

      I respect y'all sentiments about the unfairness of the system, but clearly none of you are really aware of the money involved. SMU has some crazy billionaires. But those couple big spenders are necessary because they have few alumni. With proper organization and motivation, UNT COULD definitely be in the #25-#50 spend range no question. Totally doable. Not top 10.... but guess what: those teams already had a huge payroll. NIL just makes it above the table and more democratic. UNT's athletic department and university administration is not totally bought in. I wouldn't give them NIL money either. They aren't in it to win. But if they change their mind, you'll find more NIL available. The donors at SMU are spending because the school is now in it to win. If we had the university governance we did in 2005, they wouldn't be spending, I assure you.
