The Morning After

There is a reason no one else in the country does this.

Is that really true? There are quite a few teams that play intense, pressure defense (Marquette, Arkansas, Mizzou, etc)....are we subbing so much to try to keep guys fresh only we're not getting the defensive effort that Benford is going for? What do those teams that really press do as far as subbing goes? Granted, I'm assuming that when Benford talks defense, turnovers and getting into transition that these are the teams that most resemble what he's looking for....maybe that's not right?

I've never seen anyone do it at the rate Benford has through 3 games. There have been times we've had a player on the floor for under a minute and then subbed out. I've seen kids get pulled after a minute of playing time when they make bad decisions, pick up quick fouls, et al...this is the first that I recall seeing it as a piece of strategy.

We don't play anywhere near the pressure defense of a Mizzou, Marquette or Arkansas...but even assuming we did, these teams still play in 3-5 (at least) minute stretches with the same personnel.

I'd really love to hear from Benford on this. And also find out why the F he feels he needs to rotate players at every whistle.

I chalked up the first game to a first time head coach with a new squad and playing on the road against a very good opponent. Last night's game shows that, yes, this team has talent, but much like the Creighton game, Benford looks lost as a head coach. When he was hired, I was optimistic but at the same time thought he might be one of those assistants who is outstanding as a recruiter, but is not head coaching material. The game against Alabama-Huntsville only adds evidence to the latter. Some will say "hey it's just his second game" or another of many excuses but the bottom line is a team like UNT should NEVER LOSE TO A DIVSION II SCHOOL in a game that is not an exhibition. If this team gets outhustled and outplayed by the likes of the team they faced last night, it is likely that Sun Belt play will be ugly, and the competition only gets better going into Conference USA next year.

Until he proves otherwise: Tony Benford = Vic Trilli. Yes, it's that bad. As a Texas Tech undergraduate and a UNT graduate, I have told many of my fellow Tech alums to hold off on hiring Tony Benford until he is proven as a head coach. Last night didn't help matters much.

All part of the master plan. He is in the process of alienating the fanbase, who is getting ready to vote him out, except that the town's star player made the decision to forego the NBA to stay and play for TB. In a surprise move, keep an eye out for us to hire an assistant coach with a drinking problem. Also look for TB to switch out the 4 subs per minute strategy with a mandatory 4 pass offense in order to address the high points per game by opposing offenses.

In the end, we win the SBC tourney and go to the big dance.

Hoosiers! Hoosiers! Hoosiers!

some short simple thoughts on the game:

1) it still hurts this morning. They should make a pill for things like this, call it the "morning after pill"

II) Thank God this game wasn't on TV. Listening to it was bad enough

3) We get outrebounded by a D-II school and yet Coleman gets what? 5 min of pt? just looked it up 8 min 3 boards and 2 pts. WE LOST THE BOARDS 45-40!!!!!!

D) At least JW showed up to play, hopefully his ankle isnt too bad

5) Why are shifting lines like we're a hockey team? I know this team is deep and you want to get everyone some run but it's best to do that once you've opened up a lead. Leave the guys in for longer then 20 sec to get some rhythm!!!

6) Is this the worst loss in NT basketball history? serious question. WIth the talent and expectations I would think so

7) I was so excited about this team. I EVEN TOLD ALL MY FRIENDS TO WATCH OUT FOR US THIS SEASON!!!!!!! Man do I look like a fool

163) Really....did this really happen.

Z) Where is Benford on this? Haven't heard a peep. "Oh we're going Tourny media rules so he's not available"

AA) Tony and CJ, not sure if you know this but you do more good when you're on the floor and not on the bench in fould trouble

10) CJ and Alzee a combined 4-21. I think this was actually an improvement over the first game

Number 5 may have been a bigger reason than most. Keep the fucking starters in til we get a big lead. Im beside myself with that BS putting in a 12th man into a 5 on 5 contest.
