So, Krum will have an Amtrak station and Denton won't? How dumb. That thing should have a spur that drops people off at Apogee. Denia folks will love it.

Well, Krum might (or wants to) have one. I don't want this to veer into another "beat-up-Denton-leaders thread", but you do (kind of) have a point.

TylerMeanGreen addressed the main differences between a train trip and a bus trip. I would add that a train trip to SA for a game would basically be a 7 hour mixer-pep rally, and it would give people an opportunity to meet new fellow mean green fans and form a stronger bond among-st the fan base. The same would be the case for (with a lot of political dots connecting) a train trip to Tulsa.

This is not about efficiency (airline travel), it's about fan bonding.

TylerMeanGreen you the man. I went via air (for that game) to KC with a bunch of tea-sips (friends) since they were playing Missouri there. So UNT fans meet & partied hardy seeing & laughing with all the football fans from our state that weekend. Good time.

Harry= love Mo Shelby (if it ever gets changed to a chev you'll get a warning point!)

So why do they also have a heated rivalry with Georgia Tech?

http://en.wikipedia....-Fashioned_Hate They play annually, and their historical rivalry goes back to the 1890s. They fall into the same category as all the other big time rivalries... history, and state history in particular. They didn't arbitrarily pick a nearby school to be their rival.

If you say so. The vast majority of college football fans would disagree.

Only about their own teams. Otherwise, I doubt you'll find many non-Texas Southern/non-UNT fans saying that our matchup mattered in even the slightest way.

1) Notre Dames rivalries are partly due to the historical success of the school, as well as their status as an independent. They get to play on a national stage vs. other top teams in meaningful games. They have more rivalries than anyone, but it primarily hinges around the importance of the games and Notre Dame's status at the top of the college football world (well-earned or not in recent years). Still, there's no Wake Forest-Notre Dame rivalry.

2) It's not about being contrarian, but if that's what you call making sense, then so be it. It's just that I don't think that every college football game is a rivalry game, nor is it sensible to try and make a non-conference opponent who already has a primary rival into one. You have to have meaning to have a rivalry, and every other rivalry you name has that, and most of them go back a good 100 years. The Army-Navy game goes back to 1890. And they have national significance because of what they represent, and their history. I actually think the ASU-Memphis rivalry is developing, but it lacks some of the big-game appeal of many of the others. If they could schedule every year or played in the same conference, it would become a bigger deal. As it is, you have fans at both schools who don't consider it a rivalry. I see it Arkansas State-Memphis as a developing one, I just don't know how far it has to go.

3) This entire board is obsessed with SMU. That's why every year there's a SMU rivalry thread.. I gave you my reasons for why they won't be a rival, and it hinges on them playing in another conference and having no historical basis for one. We're pretty much having to take a back seat to any of their in-state rivals from the SWC, CUSA, etc.days. Why try and make yourself someone's 3rd biggest rivalry? Regardless, rivalries happen naturally. Maybe 60 years from now, we'll have a long-standing series with SMU that's been defined by big time games and heated battles. I just don't see any near-term potential for one, and, as it is, we'll always be 2nd fiddle there, anyway.

Glad to see you came around.

You too!

Hey, genious . . . Texas State and UTSA will not be in the same conference, and will not be playing each other anymore, at least not annually.

LOL. Yeah, MAYBE we'll have a rivalry with SMU. Just like MAYBE we'll have a rivalry with Notre Dame or Southern New Mexico State or MAYBE we'll have a top 10 football team in 60 years, and MAYBE we'll have flying cars and MAYBE we'll be ruled by alien monkey people from future Earth. Anything's possible.

I used to ride the Texas Eagle quite a bit before I made the move down here and was commuting every weekend back and forth to DFW. I like the train but you have to take it for the experience. Dont take it if you are in any kind of a hurry and dont have the full day for travel time. It's a scheduled 8 hr train ride between Fort Worth and San Antonio and thats IF the train is running on time which it usually isnt. The Eagle leaves Ft Worth approx 2pm, You would be lucky to get into San Antonio before midnight. The pros of riding the Eagle: 1) You can relax, read, sleep, watch movies etc on the train, 2) It's WAY more comfortable than a Southwest flight, 3)it's actually cheaper than a tank of gas, or a plane ticket w/ cab fare to and from the airport 4) You actually get to meet and talk to your fellow travelers, and 5) It puts you right in downtown. Walking distance to several hotels, the Alamodome, and Riverwalk. No need for cab fare or rental cars.

But, i f you are the kind of person to get stressed about delays and are in a hurry... Skip it. .

Or, as Johnny Cash sang, "don't take the train to work, because you won't enjoy the ride". Except that I do, five times a week, and enjoy it no matter how crazy it gets (and it do get crazy sometimes).

Just wait for a rivalry to form naturally.

That is exactly right. Just like like waiting for meatloaf in the oven. You just have to wait. By the way, how was last nights meatloaf? Did you have the nunchuck her or any visitors?

Given my close association with many UTSA fans, and circumstances surrounding both teams -- ours still in transition from the worst era in history, short 11 scholarships, theirs with hype and the same shortage of schollies but with a "better" class coming in -- I am both extremely excited to see North Texas football in the Alamodome and really nervous at the prospect of losing*. It would be an ENTIRE YEAR of taking sh0t talking. If this is not the makings of a rivalry I am not sure what is. I remain excited about this.

*Reminds me of the situation when the Cowboys lost to Houston in their inaugural game.

Since my freshman year of 1961 we have never had a big rival. In order to do so,it takes 2 to dance, and SMU has zero interest. They still hang on to their annual game with TCU as their biggie.UTEP has rival games already established with New Mexico and New Mexico State, although State's future is uncertain at best. La Tech will go east for one year, and then move west.I would think their natural rival will probably be Tulane. If UTSA wants to establish something special with Texas State instead of UNT,then we are looking at Tulsa, but I don't know their interest level. Plus Tulsa is smallest 1a school in NCAA, and would travel about as well as Rice.

Don't expect the Tx State / UTSA football rivalry to flourish anytime soon. It's most likely the game will be only this year and then who knows? Next year they are in different conferences and UTSA's OOC schedule is full for the next several seasons.
